Marty Jordan’s Family: $1 Makes A Difference

Update~$519.00 friends have made a difference with $1 Odd Dollar.

Thank YOU everyone who contributed. I will send a check to the benefit committee!

For $1.00, I could make a friend’s dream come true, or someone else’s life a little easier.

A recent status update on my Facebook profile read, “I want this house. There are millions of people on Facebook.  All I need is for 190,000 of them to pitch in $1 each.” I laughed and commented, “Okay, you can have my dollar.”

This light-hearted Facebook exchange stayed with me. $1.00 could make a difference. I don’t have a million dollars, but I do have one dollar, and a lot of friends with one dollar.

Odd, isn’t it, how one thought attracts another thought …?

Julianne’s Facebook page introduced me to Marty Jordan, a man I will never meet.  Last August, Marty died while saving five children from a dangerous rip tide in Lake Michigan. He left behind Maureen, his then-expectant wife, who just gave birth to Martin Paul on March 17, 2010, and three other small children.

I don’t know Marty’s wife, Maureen. I do know that what Maureen is going through sucks. I do know intimately the despair of losing someone suddenly; of watching your child lose someone who can never be replaced; someone who should have had years more to give them. I know the struggle of holding it all together for the child who can’t, and holding tight to the understanding you will never get over it but someday it will be different.

Can you spare a $1.00?

Here is my thought … The Marty Jordan Family Benefit will be held on Saturday, May 15th. On the front page of Odd is a PayPal donate button. Click on the donate button to donate $1.00 to Marty Jordan’s family. On May 15th, I will take all the dollars we collected and deliver them to the benefit coordinators. Email Katybjensen@aol.com for an address if you would rather mail your $1.00.

I didn’t know Marty. I don’t know Maureen.  I don’t know their children, Jack, Liam, Caroline, and Martin. I do know we can “heart” the Jordan family. I do know one Odd dollar from each of us can make a difference. You know that too, right?

Glad you were in my Odd neighborhood. Feel free to drop by any time. I would love to hear from you in the comment section of this blog, or on Facebook or Twitter!

  1. I think most of us can spare a dollar to try to help this hero’s wife and kids. It could have been your child he saved!

  2. Interesting you posted this on April 24 — the day Marty’s dad passed away in ’93.

By the way it is Jordan not Jordon

    Great idea!

  3. Hi John,

Thank you for sharing about Marty’s dad. Seems like we are all connected in so many ways. Marty’s brother works for a client of my mine. I had know idea of this connection until Michael’s wife, Lisa saw the blog post.

Thank you for the correction. At least we had the last name spelled right in the title! I corrected it every where else, I hope!

    Thanks for stopping by Odd.
