May 13, 2012: Mother’s Day, Velcro, Skinny Jeans, Leaping Frogs!

~★~♥~♥~★~ El Morno! ♥~★~★~♥ ~
May 13, 2012

It might take me a couple of days to catch up from this lovely Mother’s Day weekend. I’m sorry to say I’m remiss in not reminding you to jump like a frog today. If you were truly looking forward to a little Mother’s Day leap frog, please accept my most sincere apologies. It was also Blame Someone Else Day, but I think we can celebrate Blame Day on Monday. I’m not sure why May 13 is Leprechaun Day. Perhaps they insisted on a day of their own. I’ve heard rumors that the leprechaun union is very strong. The food of the day was fruit cocktail. We missed celebrating it too, but there is always next year!

Happy belated birthday to Stevie Wonder (1950) and to El Morno friend Stevie Carpenter. I have no idea if Stevie can sing or dance, but more important to the El Morno crew was her review of the first book of the 50 Shades Trilogy. So far she likes the second book better. Naturally, she is only sharing this information so that we can all make our reports to the Legacy of Decency. Happy birthday Stevie!

Velcro was invented today in 1959. Did I have the only kid ever born that would not wear light-up shoes or shoes with Velcro? Light-up shoes and Velcro shoes were “noisy.” Cole surprised me one day when he was almost four by telling me that he could tie his own shoes; he then showed me by putting on his shoes and tying the laces  in a perfect bow. He even double knotted them! When I asked him how he learned to tie his own shoes, he told me he had been watching me tie them. I was a proud mother. Later that morning, when I was bragging about Cole’s new skill, a mom wondered if I had noticed that Cole’s shoes were on the wrong feet. I assured her I had but did not want to hurt his self-esteem by pointing it out to him.

Cole asked me today if I had any skinny jeans. I said that I didn’t think I did and then wondered why he had asked. He said he was just trying to figure out if I was “mom enough.” I love my kid.

Mother’s Day. What a great holiday. My sweet mother and Cole are two of the best things that ever happened to me .

Cole gave me a plastic tub full of my favorite things this Mother’s Day: a six-pack of Starbucks, a six-pack of Coke, Hershey bars with almonds, chocolate kisses, angel food cake, my favorite type of notebook and pens, and the piéce de la resistance — three packs of Pixie Stix.

I sent my mom the present she asked for and then had to reassure her that I had not spent too much on her, I over reassured and insulted her, but she said I could make it up to her on her birthday. I love my sweet mother.

Hope to be back on the El Morno track by Tuesday. If you want to find out more about what’s happened today in history, celebrity birthdays, or frog jumping, click May 13, 2011.

  1. Yaaaawwwwnnn, No leaping from me tonight.

Glad you had a Happy Mother’s Day. It was a good weekend. Now I am looking forward to next weekend!

    Sleep Well

  2. Mom Enough! Is that an insult or what. Time pretends it’s all about attachement parenting when it is all about selling magazines. I have friends who use Singers approach and friends who use Ferber’s approach and friends who use the seat of their jeans approach and while we might sometimes judges each other that is our right not the right of a magazine.
Cole’s Mother’s Day gift was so creative. I love his selection of items. He really does know you.
My Monday is starting out slow. I had better reeve it up.

    • Well like he said–he has known me his WHOLE life. I alway tell him I knew him first. The Time magazine article was way off base. Belongs in the garbage; not even recycling.

  3. I always thought frogs hopped but I guess they do leap from one lilly pad to the next.
Love the shoe story. Brillent use of self esteem.
My Mother’s Day was wonderful. We have a Mothers breakfast every year and I always look forward to it.
Off to start my week. Hope you have a super day.

    • The truth is overrated. I could not admit that I never noticed his shoes were on the wrong feet!
Glad your Mother’s Day was fun!

  4. I’m sitting her in awe over Cole’s Mother’s Day present to you! What a lucky mom you are! He’s going to make some girl a wonderful catch, as thoughtful as he is! Love the photo of you and him as a baby — brings back a ton of memories!

  5. Thanks for the birthday wishes! I have finished book 2 of the “50 Shades” trilogy and yes, I like it better than the first book. I am getting ready to start book 3. Some libraries won’t even stock these books on their shelves! LOL! 😳

  6. I just finished book 2 of the “50 Shades” trilogy and yes, I liked it better than the first book. I am getting ready to start book 3. Thanks for sharing.
