It’s Father’s Day… Eat Your Vegetables Day, Apple Strudel Day, and Barry Manilow’s Birthday Day!
And on that note, “Happy Father’s Day to my Dear Dad!”
I called my dad to wish him a happy Father’s Day and to discuss the hawk that’s living in our tree. The conversation went something like this…
Daddy we have a HAWK! A squirrel killing, bird gutting, hawk right in our very own tree… No I didn’t see its marking, it was soaring too high and too fast, but I’m sure it was a red tail hawk… Well no, we don’t have a bird book but it was a red tail hawk… No, I didn’t have Cole’s binoculars but I’m certain it was a red tail hawk… How big was it? Pretty darn big…! No, I don’t ever remember seeing another hawk but I’m sure you’ve pointed out a few, and they must have stuck solidly in my unconscious until I needed to bring out the information to identify a hawk in my backyard. Our dogs are not squirrel killers and I am not applying false evidence to a hawk. Cole saw squirrel fur in the nest… The body? Well of course the hawk carried it away and dumped it in a cement truck! This is a Chicago hawk, after all… You want a picture of the hawk? Well let me work on that…
My dad is a scientist, a geologist, a lifelong bird watcher, a retired IBM Executive. Facts are very important to him: He does his research, and identifies and solves problems based on past information and future possibilities!
He can also do one heck of a fine ‘happy dance’ in his new pair of Father Day’s shorts! If he wears those shorts to Walmart, be sure to keep a look out for him.
Naturally my dad is better, stronger, smarter, more handsome and a better dancer in his new Father’s Day shorts than your dad, but nonetheless Odd wishes all great dads and dad-like mentors a very happy Father’s Day!
What three words describe your dad best?
