★~ Today’s Quote: “May the dragon of life only roast your hot-dogs and never burn your buns!” ~ Unknown

★~ National  Hot Dog Day:

The only right way to eat a Hot Dog is Chicago Style. So now that we have that settled let me tell you how to properly prepare your Chicago Style hotdog, a taste sensation with the perfect blend of toppings.

Start with a Vienna beef hotdog, bring the water to a boil, turn the water down until it stops boiling, or a slight simmer. Place desired number of hot dogs into water and cook uncovered for 20 minutes. A Chicago Style hotdog is NEVER BOILED.

While you are simmering your hot dogs you can steam the sesame seed hotdog bun.

When the hotdogs are ready place them on the buns and add the toppings in the following order. If you top your Chicago Hot dog properly, you will get a taste of each ingredient in every bite. Remember when you add your toppings dress the dog and not the bun.

Yellow Mustard
Bright “Neon” Green Relish
Fresh Chopped Onions
Two Tomato Wedges
A Pickle Spear or Slice
Two Sport Peppers
A Dash of Celery Salt

You may have notice ketchup is not included on the list of toppings. This is because the flavor of ketchup overpowers and destroys the taste of the Hot Dog instead of complementing it. If you are tempted to include ketchup on your hotdog remember this movie line from the movie Sudden Impact starring Clint Eastwood “You know what makes me really sick to my stomach? It’s watching you stuff your face with those Hot Dogs! Nobody – I mean nobody puts ketchup on a Hot Dog!”.

I have done my best to set you on the righteous Hot Dog Path…the rest is up too you.

★~ Vanilla Ice Cream Day:

“Just Vanilla” ice cream is pretty special –  Out of all the hundreds of flavors of ice cream available to consumers today, vanilla still ranks by far the number one choice, coming in at 29 percent. (Second place is held by chocolate at only 8.9 percent.) It is such a versatile flavor of ice cream that to quote El Morno friend Carol it can go anywhere but to church on Sunday!

Dear Cousin Carla is arriving shortly so I’m running around like a chook with my head cut off. We will take a quick swing by tasty freeze for lunch, on our way home from the airport, and then get busy working on tomorrow’s Oobleck Party.  Here is the link to the Oobleck  party invitation in case you have no idea what I’m talking about or want to plan your own Oobleck party. More details will be forthcoming!

One last thing- Beware of a scam that unfortunately, I wasn’t aware of yesterday.

Do you put Ketchup on your hotdog?

  1. I do NOT put Ketchup on my hotdog. Chicago hotdogs are the best. I like vanilla ice cream too.
Not sure I will be planning an Oobleck party but I will be interesting in hearing more about yours. I am more of a drink beer. eat hot dogs and lounge in a chair type of party guy.

    Stay Cool.

  2. Let me know more about the Oobleck party. Mostly show me pictures of how messy it is. . .it does sound like fun tho. Maybe if I had a cousin that was a good sport it would be funner.
Yep Ketchup on my hotdog. Have never heard of anyone having a hotdog without ketchup but Chicagoans are little crazy. Or so I have heard.

  3. Proud to say we are well-versed in all things hot dog – brother Tom has worked for Vienna for 35 years! Alas, we are having bbq pork tonight BUT we will be serving vanilla ice cream for dessert. Hot dog hot dog hot diggedy dog – is the grandswan’s most favorite song!

  4. I NEVER put ketchup on a hot dog! Of course, my favorite hot dogs are the kosher kind — they just taste better. Vanilla ice cream is only good if it’s got chocolate sauce on it. Can’t tell I love chocolate, can you?! Interesting facts about “Harry Potter.” I guess one doesn’t have to go to college to be considered a success, but golly, just think of all the FUN you’d miss!

  5. I confess, I do put ketchup on my hot dog. However, I do the relish and onion thing, even add a bit of celery salt. Well who knew ou weren’t suppose to boil hot dogs, I guess you knew.

  6. Love vanilla ice cream especially Blue Bell homemade vanilla…expensive but worth every dime. I love cheese dogs and chili cheese dogs, no slaw dogs, please. The brand I prefer are Ball Park ’cause not only do they plumb when you cook them the ends will blow open in the microwave. It’s pretty cool. Also, a Nathan’s or Hebrew National dog are in the top three. And I put ketchup on my hot dogs with a little yellow mustard and dill pickle relish! That is all 🙂

    • You microwave your hot dogs so you can blow the ends out of them, put Ketchup on them, and skip the celery salt and onions–it’s a wonder the Hot Dog police have not carted you away!
Blue Bell makes great Vanilla ice cream! I remember it well.

    • Hope you enjoyed your hot dog. However you did not answer the Ketchup question?? We have hotdogs almost every Saturday if we are home for lunch.
