National Miniature Golf Day:

Miniature Golf has been around since the 1800s.  During that time, people considered it highly inappropriate for a woman to raise a golf club above her shoulder level. In 1867, the Ladies’ Putting Club of St. Andrews, Scotland built a small scaled-down golf course so that women could play the sport without creating a scandal. It was the first miniature golf course in history.

Miniature golf courses began popping up in America during the early 20th century. However, these facilities were usually located at hotels and private resorts, so they were not yet available to the masses. In 1916, James Barbar of North Carolina built “Thistle Dhu,” the first quintessential miniature golf course. The design of the course was neo-classical, similar to the style of the Tuileries Garden at the Louvre in Paris. By the 1930s, miniature golf had become a popular pastime all across the country. Last year, Miniature Golf Day was on September 21,2012.

♥~ Cocaine Habit: Police on the Colombian Caribbean island of San Andres arrested three fake nuns carrying $35 thousand worth of cocaine under their clothes. “I love bacon. I eat it everyday,” Pearl Cantrell told NBC affiliate KRBC when asked her secret to living so long. “I don’t feel as old as I am. That’s all I can say,” Cantrell added.

The great-great-grandmother, who lives in central Texas and still dances – some of her favorites include country dancing, waltzing and two-stepping – celebrated her 105th birthday recently with a three-day event that included more than 200 guests. Although Cantrell retired decades ago, she kept mowing her own lawn until the age of 100, according to the West Texas Tribune – a heart-healthy habit that probably helped keep her going as well.

♥~ Scratch, Sniff, Evacuate: Energy West in Great Falls, Montana, distributes scratch-and-sniff cards to its customers so they can learn to recognize the smell of a gas leak. After a batch of expired cards were trashed, they were picked up by a garbage truck that compressed them with the other trash, which released the smell to the entire town as the truck traveled its route through town. Gas customers recognized the smell, alarms were raised, and several buildings were evacuated due to the smell. The gas company apologized, but you have to admire a campaign that successful.

And on the third day, Comed said, “Let there be light, and there was, and it was GOOD. Yes, I have power! My generator has been cleaned up and put away, along with two new 50-foot industrial extension cords. It earned an easy-access parking spot in the shed, and while I hope we don’t bond again soon, I’m grateful to know how to use the damn thing.

Yesterday, Chicagoans shivered through the chilliest May 10 in 32 years; it was warmer in Alaska and the Yukon! Today, some of us will shiver through the annual Chicago Waldorf Mayfair. The day is overcast and chilly, but over the years we have persevered through far worse, holding on tightly to Maypole ribbons and parading around the Maypole in near tornado conditions. We weren’t quitters. These days, the young parents insist on moving the fair inside when fair conditions turn cold and wet. They will never know the joys of a soggy bakery lemon bar or tofu burger or what it was like to try to start a charcoal grill under a hood of coats with wet matches. The school old-timers will laugh at them as they hustle their kids inside the warm, dry school and share stories of Mayfair’s past when it was so cold that the children’s lips froze to their recorders (slight exaggeration). Or maybe we will talk about the years of petting zoos and pony rides without hand wipes or hand sanitizers to wash up with after the ride or petting was over. Those kids ate their tofu burgers with hands that had patted a goat. OMG, I miss those days, but I won’t mind reading tarot cards (my job for the day) without puddles of water at my feet and frozen fingers.

What are your plans for this Super Saturday?

  1. Morno,
Looks like a good day. Ice cream bread looks interesting, but can I substitute nachos with the works? Fun about the Senior, Senior citizen eating bacon. I guess it’s true what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
Golfing today, Going out to brunch tomorrow to celebrate Mother’s day with my sisters family. Ironman at some point, maybe.
Mayfair sounds interesting, hope your weather is bearable.
    Have a good one.

    • Yep, substitutes are allowed! Especially if they are nachos with the works! YUM. LOL…I think you nailed the bacon story.
      Hope golf was good.

  2. Good Morno,
Love the Maypole and slide show. Looks like a beautiful celebration of spring. Hope your weather cooperates. I want to see the Great Gatsby this weekend and finish my yard clean up. Who knows I might even try a loaf of that ice cream bread. Looks easy enough, but sometimes tho recipes are the killers. The senior, senior and her daily bacon is too funny!
    Happy Saturday.

    • Thanks. It really is a fun festival. The great Gatsby does look like fun. Lol..you just addressed my concerns over that bread…too easy!
Hope you got your chores done. I need to get out there next week.

  3. Good Morning,
I’ve always been a Twilight Zone fan and even like the creepy music. I can’t wait to try the ice cream bread. Sounds almost to good to be true, have you tried it? My kids loved to play miniature golf over all most any other activity, I’m always looking for deals.
Mayfair looks like a lot of fun. If we didn’t live 1000 miles away we would love to go. Have fun. Hope your weather is better than expected.

    • I’m trying the ice cream bread today (May 12)! I just found a deal for Miniature golf on Groupon. My dad and Cole played when he was in Abq. They had such fun.
Weather is chilly, but sunny. Kind of. Sunny Chicago Style.
Hope your day is sunny and not too warm!

  4. I had to wear a COAT on my early morno walk with Darling Dallas today — yuck, has nobody told Mother Nature that it’s mid-May???
Love your story of the West Texas woman who eats bacon every day! There are some tough ole birds out in those parts.
Yeah, you got power back! Woo-hoo! And I loved your discussion of how things have changed over the years for Mayfair — Brian Williams had a similar lament last night on his program. One would think we’d be smarter than that, worrying over a few germs and such!

    • I wish that I had taken a coat or at least a sweat shirt to the fair. My part was suppose to be inside. It wasn’t. It didn’t rain and fortunately the wind pushed away the clouds for a little sun every once in awhile, but by the lake, outside on a barely 50 degree day brought back the “old days” in full force. I don’t worry about germs, never have. But I did face a huge brohaha in my Mayfair chair days about out petting zoo and not having hand sanitizer ring side which I’m pretty sure does more harm than a few goat germs. Obviously, I did not score points for my sensitivity. But I did make my point, and I know this is hard to believe, but at times I am more scary that goat germs, or hand sanitizers.
I know you are not a fan of more than the occasional piece of bacon, but I really appreciated that the story.
Just think of Poor Dallas this summer, and maybe it won’t make the weather right now seem so bad….maybe? Thanks for the card. Made my day.

  5. i was a little too young for twilight zone, but caught the reruns. yes, lots of stars appeared on the show.
putt putt was always fun. timing the windmill was the main challenge if I remember correctly.
yeah! power’s on! it is such a wonderful feeling. been there, done that.
enjoy your school fair! not many more left for you. you’re right about hanging onto those old school ways. some parents just need to loosen up & toughen up!
had a ton of hard rain yesterday. the usual flooding, but was safely at work. we still need more rain.

    • It was cold out there today…Obviously I’m not as tough as I use to be, but I hung in there for a good 4 hours. I was outside not in, like I expected…thankfully the sun came out just often enough to make it bearable and their wasn’t a downpour.
Yep, the windmill on putt putt is always a challenge.
Power, I now own the no power t-shirt, we don’t have to go back again. 😀

  6. We had a bit of rain today. Naturally. I had my van washed last Thurs. It’s begining to creep me out. We are in the midst of a horrible draught but the last three times I had my van washed, it rained within the next couple of days. Not enough to do any good, just enough to trash my van.
I am so glad your power is back on.

    • I would start to capitalize on the rain-van connection. Perhaps the farmers will be willing to pay for your car washes and a little extra!!
Me too! Electricity is such a good thing.

  7. It is 17 minutes into Mother’s Day, so let me be the first to wish you a very Happy Mom’s Day. Glad to hear you have your power back on. I plan to spend my Mom’s day at my son’s for a cookout and the bestest thing is that my grandson will be home from the AF to be with us. Best present of all. Been a year that he has been in and the 2nd time he has been home. We may have cold weather, but what does that matter when you have family around you? Have a wonderful day. By the way, thank you for my fuzzy socks…My feet are always cold..always.

    • Wow, you do have a wonderful Mother’s Day Planned!! The weather won’t matter a bit, and it is sunny!
Enjoy your socks quick…I don’t think they will survive to many cycles through the washing machine 😀

  8. I have never heard of ice cream bread. Ever. I am intrigued. I may have to try it!! Happy Mother’s Day by the time you read this, by the way!!! Hope you have a good one!

    • I am making it today! Cole is buying chunky monkey ice cream and self-rising flour as I type! You know, I will let you know how it turns out.
