★~  Workaholics Day:

workaholic

If possible take a break from work today:  A longer than usual lunch, an afternoon movie, or nap. Or if you have the day off or time to spare give a workaholic in your life a break today!

★~ Bikini Day:

The skimpy two-piece bathing suit created by Louis Réard was launched today at a fashion show in Paris in 1946. The bikini, is named after the islands on which atomic bombs were tested. The new bathing suit went off with a bang, and summer has never been the same. Though the two-piece is widely spotted on sandy coastlines throughout the world today, this bathing suit was not always so commonplace. In fact, it caused such an uproar that some nations banned the garment outright within their borders.
Celebrate today by wearing a bikini to the beach or pool, or just be glad women have plenty of choices when it comes to beachwear.

★~ Graham Cracker Day:

graham crackers.

Isn’t it interesting that the Graham cracker, which is most often paired with an apple and served to nursery school children, was originally invented to suppress carnal urges? The Graham cracker was originally marketed as “Dr. Graham’s Honey Biskets” and was conceived of as a health food as part of the Graham Diet, a regimen to suppress what he considered unhealthy carnal urges—the source of many maladies, according to Graham. The best way to celebrate Graham Cracker Day? Well, you could take a nap, wake up, and enjoy an apple paired with a graham cracker, use 1/3 of a graham cracker to make a s’more, or make a pie with a graham cracker crust.

★~ Apple Turn-Over Day:

apple turnover

There’s nothing quite like an apple turnover—the bubbling, cinnamon-scented contents bursting out of a buttery crust, in a portable pie made for individual consumption! Fruit-filled turnovers first started making an appearance in the early 19th century, when the individually packaged pies were largely sold by street vendors to the working class.

I really like Pepperidge Farm apple turnovers—you bake them in your oven. Easy and delicious!

♥ ~ 1865 – United States Secret Service was created. At first, the agency was only responsible for protecting against the counterfeiting of U.S. currency. In 1901, following the assassination of President William McKinley, the Secret Service began protecting the President of the U.S. The scope of responsibility for the Secret Service has grown enormously over the years. This arm of the U.S. Treasury is now also responsible for guarding the White House, the Executive Office Building, the Treasury building and annex along with all the billions of $$$ stored in its vaults.

♥ ~ 1937 – The Hormel Company introduced SPAM luncheon meat.

♥ ~ 1942 – Edsel Ford family produced 30-million automobiles but weren’t allowed to  own new car because of strict wartime rationing.

♥ ~ 1980 – Tom Shufflebotham charmed 511 worms out of the ground in 30 minutes at the World Worm Charming Championships in Willaston, England. Worm charmers ply their talent by shaking the ground (digging?) with various garden tools. Water may not be used.

♥~ 1996 – The first cloned animal, a sheep named Dolly, was born in Scotland.  Because scientists cloned Dolly from a mammary gland cell, they named her after Dolly Parton.  (Would scientists lie to you?)

♥ ~ 1986 – Janet Jackson made it to the top of the charts. She was the youngest (19 years old) to hit number one with an LP since twelve year old Steve Wonder  in 1963. Produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Control was Jackson’s  third album, but her first to hit number one.

♥ ~ 1810 – P. T. (Phineus Taylor) Barnum circus showman; Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey’s circus, the Greatest Show on Earth, was the brainchild of a man who said, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” P.T. Barnum. His first ‘pull the wool over their eyes’ act happened in 1830, when he had people believing that an elderly black woman, Joice Heth, was George Washington’s childhood nurse. Barnum, created the circus as we know it. Merging with Mr. Bailey and later, the Ringling Brothers in 1907, P.T. Barnum left us the lasting legacy of the circus extravaganza, the cotton candy, the clowns, the daring young man on the flying trapeze, and the parade of elephants

★~ Good to Know:

louis-reard inventor-of-bikini

♥~ When Reard planned to showcase his swimsuit creation at a Paris fashion show, he was unable to find any Parisian models who would be seen in the skimpy garment. Finally, he hired Micheline Bernardini, a model who also worked as a nude dancer in a Paris nightclub to debut the bikini to the fashion world

♥~ Only a few years after the introduction of the bikini in 1946, fashion designers began to create new innovations to keep their swimsuit a step above other swimsuits. Such innovations included a bikini constructed entirely of red hair, a bikini with propellers attached to the bra cups, and a bikini constructed solely of porcupine quills.

♥~ Bikinis were banned at the 1951 Miss World pageant. It was believed that contestants wearing bikinis in the swimsuit competition would have an unfair advantage over their more modest competitors.

♥~ The release of the popular song, “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” in 1960 rocketed the bikini swimsuit into a  culture icon.

♥~ A number of beach-themed movies ( How to Stuff a Wild Bikini)  popularize the bikini among teenage girls.

♥~ In 1964, the bikini made it to the cover of Sports Illustrated for the first time. The bikini pictured was a relatively modest, white swimsuit with brief-style bottoms and a bra-like top.

A husband and wife had a human cannonball act in the circus.

One day the wife ran off with the lion tamer, leaving the husband extremely dejected.

The strong man asked him what he was going to do.

The husband answered, “This is a disaster. I don’t know where I’m going to find another woman of her caliber.”

That Hippo reminds me of me this morno at  5am….it was a long night but I’ll have my revenge.  Happy Friday!

  1. Morno,
I’ve been yawning like that hippo all morning. Late 4th of July last night. Time for my summer nap.
Never liked graham crackers. Not working today, or playing golf. One of the gals at the office brings apple turnovers in every so often. Very tasty.
Hope you have an little R & R today, too!

    • It was a much slower, quieter day Sounds like you enjoyed an inside lazy day too! Nice every once in awhile, isn’t it!

  2. Good Morno or Noon-o,
Hot as hades today, and we are off to a swim party and barbecue, Frankly, I would rather be home in the ac. But no rest for weary of wicked. Kids are loving every minute, but I think my husband is longing for work on Monday, I know I’ll be ready for camp. My kids call graham crackers the healthy cookie because when they are STARVED and dinner is on the way, I tell them to have graham cracker.
Hope things quiet down and you get break!
    Happy July 5th!

    • The healthy cookie. Funny! Sometimes too much fun can wear you down to nothing! Hope you have one day this weekend to call your own. We had a better day and tomorrow we’re going to Indiana for part of the day to lie on the beach, eat good food, and enjoy good company! I’m really looking forward to it.

  3. graham crackers are a good alternative cookie. i remember as a kid cracking them into a bowl & adding some milk as a cereal. needed to eat quickly otherwise it turned into mush!
i hope you have been having a restful day. an easy, peaceful feeling as the eagles would say!
    good afternoon!

    • I have a box of graham cracker and will have to try your recipe for graham cracker cereal. Maybe toss a few mini marshmallows in for good measure. It was a good day. Slow start and Vickie came to take over at around 3pm so both Cole and I escaped! The Eagles got it right!

  4. I guess it’s “lazy” day. I haven’t done much of anything today and don’t plan to. I did do my mile on the treadmill this morning because I knew I was taking the rest of the day off.

  5. Spam spam spam spam…..out of all of the facts of the day that is the one I latched onto . The hubby loves Spam and we went to the Spam Museum a few years back—it was actually a lot of fun and very informative! Happy Spam day to you!

  6. I did play hooky from my workaholic tendencies, as evidenced by my late appearance here! I didn’t work nearly as hard as usual — guess I’ll be playing catch-up for the rest of the week, ha!

    • Good for you! Sometimes it’s good to just let it go…I’m glad you took sometime to play.
