Fried chicken has been around for hundreds of years; it was first brought to this country by Scottish immigrants. It was later perfected by cooks in the South who added flavorful and unique spices to their coating mix. It became popular because it was easy and inexpensive to make. Dipping the chicken into the flour batter, and then dipping it into the hot oil was like poultry in motion.

How RUDE!

bear

A black bear with a sweet tooth crashed a little kid’s birthday party on Saturday. Literally. The uninvited guest shimmied its way up onto the roof of a Starr Hill home, crashed through a skylight and landed in the middle of Alicia Bishop’s and Glenn Merrill’s living room, the homeowners say. My muchacho (of-course, I can speak Spanish) is feeling mucho mejor. Ok. I’ll stop showing off. Yesterday, after taking my teen to the doctor for a second Strep test that came back negative, more lab work, and a just in case antibiotic I headed home with my patient. Soon after he informed me that green tea might be the cure for what ailed him. Mmm. Why not, it would be good to escape the house for a bit and make a run to the store. Oh. The green tea that offered the most promise of a cure was sold at Argo tea shop. Mmm. Fine. The tea cost $20.00 for 2 ounces—which makes about 15 small cups of tea. Holy teacup. And that’s not all,  the tea needs to be steeped at 170 degree to soak the most out of each leaf; to make sure the water is the correct temp requires a tea thermometer. No. No. A cooking thermometer would work fine or the tea drinker could take my word that 170 degrees was when bubbles just start to form on the surface of the water. I have no idea if this is true but it sounds right. We had white honey at home to use as a sweetener. By the time we left the store I was praying the kid would recover before I killed him.  This morning, my kid woke up and it was a miracle! Who knows or cares if it was the green tea, antibiotic, or my prayers, but Cole feels so much better. Not 100% but much, much better. Thank Goodness, we are down to an ounce of tea.

Off to make Lemonade….wishing everyone a wonderful Sunday!

  1. Morno,
Glad to hear Cole is feeling better. Whoa that is very fine tea? I hope you can find something to do with the tea leaves. Use every last drop.
The KFC Colonel and I are on a first name basis. My sister also makes great fried chicken.
Very brave bear to mess with Mom’s cupcakes and birthday party. Nice of the dog to stand up to the bully.
Playing catch up today so I can give the office some attention. Maybe, we’ll have a fried chicken picnic lunch this week. Everyone did a great job keeping the wolf away from the door while I was away.
    Have a good one.

    • It was a brave bear. We like KFC too. Popeyes is also really good.
A fried chicken picnic sounds like a great idea. Nice not to come home to any crises.

  2. So glad your boy is better. If it was the tea that cured him, I’d be worried. Slip green tea from the grocery store into the fancy tea tin. I hope it came with a fancy tea tin!
Cold fried chicken one of our favorite picnic foods. One more week on the road and then we’ll be home. I’m not ready yet but I’m sure I will be as we wind down.
I would be so mad at that bear. What nerve. Do all bears have tongues that long? My kids love Odds and Ends almost as much as I do.

    • Great idea! A tea switch. No tin, tho. Can you believe NO TIN.
We like fried chicken for picnics too.
Liz, we’ll have to check on the length of bears tongues and get back to you—I couldn’t answer you off the top of my head.
Glad your kids liked the stories! Enjoy your last week.

  3. So Cole is finally coming back from the dark side? Good to hear? Wow…..that is some pricey tea. I’m with Liz ^ making the cheaper brand switch!
Beautiful fireworks. July 4th was actually very quiet. Last night a bit more noisy.
Great aim by the water thrower securely behind the door! Makes me wonder the circumstances…..
So much for the onboard kicking up your heels!
    Props to the dog.
    Mmmm lemonade!
    Good night!

      • Yep he’s cured. Two step tests, and lab work later they told us he didn’t have strep, mono, west niles virus (my fb friends were a big disappointment to me–their medical diagnostic skills are awful). They didn’t know what he had other than some sort of infection which the antibiotic seemed to nail right away. Cole said it was the tea.
        The dog was hero!

  4. Happy days, Cole is better. I just hate it when he’s not feeling well. I bet those people’s home was full of bear hair when that guy left. I was sad to see they shot him.
This has been a day of doing everything twice. time to sit and read for a bit.

    • Well he did eat the cupcakes! Besides never click over and read the story because I’ll never share the sad stuff on Odd.
One step up, One step back, Cha, Cha, Cha. Hope today was better.
