Fast food has its staples: hamburgers and cheeseburgers, french fries, soda, chicken nuggets or a grilled sandwich. More “exotic” offerings include onion rings, milkshakes, hash browns, and fried fish items. But rarely— Wienerschnitzel franchises excepted—are hot dogs on the menu. For McDonald’s, there’s a reason. Blame Ray Kroc, the man who bought the tiny company in 1954 and turned it into a multibillion-dollar fast food behemoth. In 1977, Kroc wrote an autobiography titled Grinding It Out: The Making Of McDonald’s, documenting his vision for burgers and fries made quickly, cheaply, and on an immense scale. In the book he notes that McDonald’s is always experimenting with new potential additions to the menu, going so far as to say that “it’s entirely possible that one day we’ll have pizza [on the menu].” (Pizza was indeed tested, and made the menu of roughly 500 stores before being withdrawn. According to Wikipedia, though, McPizza was recently available at three McDonald’s locations in Spencer, West Virginia, Orlando, Florida, and New Haven, Connecticut.) But Kroc singled out hot dogs as the one food beyond the pale of even experimentation: “On the other hand, there’s damned good reason we should never have hot dogs. There’s no telling what’s inside a hot dog’s skin, and our standard of quality just wouldn’t permit that kind of item.”

Nevertheless, Kroc’s edict did not withstand the test of time. McDonald’s has tested hot dogs— the McHotDog, naturally— in a number of markets, most notably at Toronto’s SkyDome (now the Rogers Centre), home of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Big week. Cousin Carla arrives on Thursday and we have miles to go before we sleep. Well, the teen is still sleeping, but when he gets up we have lots of rats to kill and problems to work. We will have to start by making sure that Starbucks still makes Cousin Carla’s drink the way she likes it.  I took this camp video yesterday of Susie Cute the hound and Bud Lite. Cracks me up at the point where Bud seems to realize that Susie is BIG. A gentle giant.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Monday with a side of the junk food of your choice.

  1. A whole day for eating junk? What will they think of next??

Can’t imagine McD selling hot dogs — or pizza. That’s just wrong on so many levels. Still, I imagine having a hot dog at a baseball game would be considered “American.”

Today must be a good day for birthdays — lots of talent in that list.

Yeah, Cousin Carla’s coming — hope the weather is perfect for her visit!

    • I don’t know. But I always enjoy being encouraged to indulge.
Yep hot dogs and baseball are as American as apple pie!

  2. Morno,
Those campers seem like unlikely playmates but they seem to be having a good time.
I had enough junk food over the weekend, but a hotdog sounds good.
    Enjoy your day.

    • Bud Lite has a lot of attitude and Susie is playful but gentle. They do have a good time.
Hope you enjoyed a hot dog! If not today (Wed) is National Hot Dog Day!!

  3. I love to go to the State Fair and eat all the junk food I can hold. Which fortunately is not to much. I won gold fish at the State Fair 17 years ago and they are still with me, enjoying the waterfall.
    That was a cute Video.

  4. Is it bad that now I want a hot dog???? I really really want a hot dog now. Darn you, Katybeth.
The doggie video is adorable. I love it. They are great playmates. Thanks for the smiles.

  5. Playing catch up……
I’m sure I ate some form of junk food yesterday. I’ve been bad lately.
I’m glad I missed the MCD hot dog. I don’t know what they serve these days. In high school, I enjoyed the 1/4 pounder with cheese.
    It’s fun watching playing dogs!
2 more days until Cousin Carla……almost ready?

    • Glad your back. Into every life a little junk food must fall! I don’t remember the MCD hot dog either. These days I order the Happy Meal. I like to save the toy and leave them in unexpected places if I visit someone.
Bud Lite and Susie Cute are fun to watch.
