★~ Eat your Vegetables Day:
Don’t argue just eat your vegetables! You’ve been skipping over them for far too long and today it’s time to make a change. And if you don’t, you’re not getting Apple strudel.
★~ Apple Strudel Day:
Apple Strudel is a lovely layered pastry filled with juicy apples’ sort of like pie, but strudely. It is also the national food of Austria along with Weinerschnitzel and Tafelspitz.
★~ Today in History:
♥~ 1837 – Charles Goodyear got a patent for rubber, the squishy, bouncy stuff.
♥~ 1871 – Captain Martin Bates and Anna Swan were married in London. It turned out to be a tall order for the couple. He was 7’2″ tall and she was 7’11” (without her high heels). Imagine the size of the wedding cake!
♥~ 1912 – Talk about long shots: Wishing Ring won at Latonia race track in Kentucky. Most people didn’t even notice because the horse had been a non-performer until then. A $2 wager to win paid an incredible $1,885.50 for a few, very lucky ticket holders.
♥~ 1978 – Shadow Dancing, by Andy Gibb, reached the number one spot on the pop music charts for the first of seven weeks.
★~Born Today:
♥~ 1951 – Joe Piscopo comedian, actor: Saturday Night Live, Sidekicks, Wise Guys, Johnny Dangerously

♥~ 1963 – Greg Kinnear – actor: What Planet Are You From?, Talk Soup, Blankman, Sabrina, As Good As It Gets, You’ve Got Mail, Mystery Men, Nurse Betty
★~ Did You Know:
♥~ Potatoes originated in the Andean mountain region of South America between 4,000 and 7,000 years ago and were introduce to Europe by Spanish explorers who “discovered” them in the 16th century.
♥~ It is thought that potatoes were brought to the U.S. by Irish immigrants in the 18th century, but they didn’t become popular until the 19th century.
♥~ According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest potato grown was 7 pounds, 1 ounce
♥~ Germans eat twice as many potatoes as Americans.
♥~ Mr. Potato Head was introduced by the Hasbro company in 1952.
♥~ Thomas Jefferson gets the credit for introducing “french fries” to America when he served them at a White House dinner in 1802.
♥~ The potato is the world’s fourth most important food crop
♥~ The average American eats 126 pounds of potatoes a year
♥~ New York consumes more potatoes than any other state, followed by Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Texas
★~ Today’s Giggle:
Two elderly ladies happen to meet at the market after not seeing one another for some time. After inquiring about each other’s health, one of them asks how the other one’s husband is doing.
“Oh, Ted died last week! He went out to the garden to dig up a cabbage for dinner, had a heart attack and dropped down dead right there in the middle of the vegetable patch!”
“Oh, dear! I’m very sorry.” replied her friend. “What did you do?”
“I opened a can of peas instead.”

I had to laugh when I saw that today was the day that Charles Goodyear patented rubber–after our two stops at tire stores in Ireland we began to notice an abundance of tire stores usually close to hotel’s. When you enter the tire repair shop they look at you with sympathy and ask “Did you hit a curb, now?” Yep. And then they fix you right up for a fair price and send ye on your way. Left turns and curbs are tough on tires in Ireland but it usually only happens once, maybe twice…or some I was told by the tire salesman that charmed me into a safe new tire–after our tire went flat for the second time.
So tell me…what is your favorite veggie? I am dying to know! Odd Loves company.
I am off very early this morning–glad I caught you. Ireland up dates are great. The food does sound interesting. My favorite veggie is snap peas or cauliflower.
Have a good one!
I have been racing over for Ireland updates 😀 and stopped by El Morno to tell you Asparagus is by far the best vegetable. No contest (was there a contest).
Have another amazing day!
Amazing how you are keeping up with El Morno from Ireland. Love catching up with both.
Potatoes are not really a vegetable they are consider a tuber which is root vegetable but who cares they taste great and the Did You Know Information stays the same either way.
Glad you are having fun and thinking of us too.
XO
I love all veggies. Watch those curbs, and eat your tubers.
Love apple strudel! Anna Swan hailed from Nova Scotia, which is just east of where I live!
Hugs,
Wendy
