Canines have enjoyed treats for centuries, although earlier versions were quite a bit different than today’s variety. Dog treats used to include stale, moldy bread, rotting leftovers and rock-hard biscuits made out of grain. Pretty “ruff”, right? But American James Spratt changed all that on a trip to England in the mid-1800s when he saw hungry, stray dogs scavenging for leftover food. It wasn’t long before he developed a cake-like biscuit comprised of meat, grains and vegetables called “Meat Fibrine Dog Cakes” and the rest, as they say, is history. Then in 1908, the F. H. Bennett Biscuit Co. of New York developed hard-baked, bone-shaped biscuits comprised of various minerals, cow’s milk and meat products, the Milk-Bone.

★~ Banana Nut Bread Day:
Bananas arrived in the United States in the 1870s and quickly became one of the most popular fruits on the market. It wasn’t long before they started to appear in dessert recipes as the star ingredient. The first cookbooks that mentioned banana bread were published during the Great Depression. Culinary historians believe that a resourceful housewife who did not want to throw away over-ripe bananas may have invented the original recipe.

Speaking of bananas, in case you missed or forgot the segue it is banana nut bread day, I have a pup that is camping with us and because of his digestive issues the only treat he can have is bananas and he LOVES them. This is a first for me. I’ve had campers dine on whole raw rock cornish game hens (from the grocery store – thank goodness), blueberries, rice cakes, pretzels, organic broccoli, tofu along with the more common apples, carrots, and green beans but I have never had a camper snack on bananas. I tried to give my pups a piece of banana but they were not impressed. They do love bacon, tho.
Does your pup eat bananas? Just curious. Aren’t you?
Have a super Saturday!
Odd Loves Company!

Morno,
No dog to give a dog biscuit too. Kind of a lonely feeling. Banana Nut bread is good. I enjoy a piece at the place I get my coffee every now and then.
Rainy, ugly day so I guess I will finish the taxes and pay some bills. Having dinner with a buddy who is in town tonight.
The hippo was funny. I know stereotypical.
Sorry Mike. Why not buy a box for a friends dog? Or maybe to hand out to a neighbors dog…Scooby snacks is a nice choice.
Very stereotypical but I laughed too!
Morno,
We are all feeling a lot better. I still have one kid with a fever but everyone else seems to have recovered. DH and I leave next week for our mini get away and I am so grateful this all happened before we left and I’m more grateful than ever to be escaping for a few days.
Love banana nut bread and planned to make a few loaves for the freezer this weekend.
Love the odds and end. Can’t imagine living around those goats but not as bad as having a hippo for a neighbor, I guess.
I will have to ask my MIL if their dog eats banana. It does seem like an odd snack for a dog. Maybe, I will even buy Daisy some dog biscuits. I not only love my in-laws, I love their little dog too (as you would say)
Happy Saturday!
I’m sure Daisy would love to help celebrate dog biscuits!
I agree, no hippos for neighbors. I made banana nut bread yesterday, and we devoured it!
too true quote today!
impressive dog bone demonstration! hope it was tasty.
love bananas. you should see how long it takes me to choose the right bananas at produce! my previous dogs ate them with gusto. not sure if i have shared with nik yet. strange……
had no idea goats sounded like that! interesting adult responses to the hippo explosion: what was that? i think we’re done here!
i have memories of going to the pa farm show as a youngster & walking directly behind a horse at the wrong time. his/her tail almost whacked us!
can’t complain about this weather here.
good day!
I love bananas too! Perfect fruit. I just assume if they aren’t green or mushy they are ripe–there is more to it than that??
Well inquiring minds want to know–Does Nik or doesn’t Nik like bananas?
That hippo makes even a Doberman look pretty good–and we all know bad dobes can be….. :-/
I loved all of your links today. Scout will, too. I’ll try one of the dog biscuit recipes.
Thanks! Be sure to tell us which recipe you try and how Scout likes it!!
Darling Doggie won’t eat bananas. Apples, carrots, green beans, etc.? Definitely YES!
I dare not tell him today’s Dog Biscuit Day, or he will be begging for a cookie every time he takes a breath (just a little more often than he already does, ha!)
You ought to see him slipping and sliding on the ice and snow in the backyard! It’s quite funny, though I try not to let him see me laughing — don’t want to embarrass him, you know!
Poor DD. I’m glad your sensitive to his sheltie feelings…they are one of the more sensitive breeds after all!
My pups have been awful beggars lately. Every time I walk in the kitchen they are on my heals in hopes of a hand out.
None of them will eat bananas.
