El Morno

★~  Today’s Quote: I certainly feel that the time is not far distant when a knowledge of the principles of diet will be an essential part of one’s education. Then mankind will eat to live, be able to do better mental and physical work, and disease will be less frequent.” ~ Fannie Farmer

★~ Sponge Cake Day:

Sponge Cake

Sponge cake is the perfect dessert to enjoy at the end of a warm summer day. It is light and fluffy and has just enough sweetness to cleanse the palette after a meal.

It’s said that one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting developed her own version of the sponge cake, which had already been around for quite some time. Apparently, back then, even the Royals were cutting back on the lunch meal, and poor Anna, a lady-in-waiting, couldn’t stand the hunger pangs any longer. She asked her servants to sneak her in a pot of tea and some baked goods to tide her over to supper. Soon she started inviting her friends round for five o’clock tea, arguably one of Britain’s best traditions.

One of the treats served at these gatherings was two layers of sponge cake sandwiched between jam and whipped cream, dusted in castor sugar and cut into small squares. Eventually the Queen caught on and the “sandwiches” became her personal favorite and were eventually named after her.

★~  Ride The Wind Day:

Gossamer Condor

Today was inspired by the Gossamer Condor, “the first human-powered aircraft capable of controlled and sustained flight ,” flew the first figure-right, as piloted by amateur cyclist and hang-glider pilot Bryan Allen today in 1977.  Talk about riding the wind!

Other ideas for today: bike ride, roller blade in the park, fly a kite, fly in a plane, sail out to sea, or just run really really fast.

★~ Today in History:

Fannie Farmer

Known as the ‘mother of measurements’, she revolutionized food preparation throughout the world with her introduction of precise measurements — the level teaspoon, tablespoon, cup, etc. And, in 1919, candy maker Frank O’Connor paid Fannie the ultimate compliment by naming his now famous company, Fanny Farmer Candy Shops.

I’m not sure what our Saturday beholds. I suspect we’ll carry on with our basement projects after taking Friday off and I’ll hang out with my campers while my teen hangs out with friends. I did just watch the movie Her written and directed by Spike Jonze and I really liked it. If you haven’t seen it you might want to consider renting it. Thought provoking and good.

What are your plans for the day?

  1. Morno,
Hitting the golf course by 8 and then having breakfast. Suppose to be a scorcher today. Wind in the form of a breeze would be nice. Shortcake looks good. I’ll catch up with the odds and ends later.
    Have a good one.

  2. The Lazy Vizsla video perfectly sums up how I feel those mornings I have to get up early. Being a night owl by nature, hearing my alarm go off makes me want to howl!

Enjoying a final lazy day today before heading back to work in Delaware after a week off.

    • Lol. I know you hate those early mornos. Go ahead howl. You have a wonderful howl.
A week off! How nice. Hope you are heading back rejuvenated.

  3. I’ll pass on sponge cake. Will take the raspberries on top though!
I’m with the plans guy when it comes to people who are late or, better yet, no shows. Don’t get me started…..
Lazy Vizsla is pretty funny & realistic! I should send this to my colleagues in preparation for Monday!
I guess with the millions of people doing the ALS Challenge that there would be a few(!) screw ups in the mix. Bad screw ups.
Difficult to get back into the weekend work swing of things. Just not flowing yet.
    Good afternoon!

    • Raspberries it is!
Vizsla do love to sleep and sound just like that when you try to wake them up
I want to say how can you fail at something so simple. And then I have visions of Cole’s 17 gallon galvanized bucket barely missing him. My kid says he planned where to stand, I think he was graced with divine intervention. 😀

  4. The dog videos were pretty darn cute! And shower thoughts—-brilliant!
My day is cleaning and doing a bit of baking–putting the EZDoh to use for some rolls. Audrey and her hubby are coming tomorrow to take in a few of the Mason City sights and going to be at the Chiles B & B overnight so I am getting ready for that short visit.
    Have a good one!

    • Sounds like you are having quite the weekend. Good guests are always fun and I know you enjoy Audrey.
I love the shower insights too!

    • That bully was so cute. The food of the day can be eaten anytime during the month. El Morno, rules. 😀
