★~Today’s Quote: I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now? John Lennon

★~ Fire Prevention Day:

Today kicks off Fire Prevention Week. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8 but continued into, and did most of its damage on, October 9, 1871. Recognize Fire Prevention Week by checking your smoke detectors, and discussing and practicing a fire plan with members of your family.

★~ Curious Events Day:

★~ Submarine-Hoagy-Hero-Grinder Day:

Submarine: a king-sized sandwich made from an Italian loaf of bread approximately 12 inches long and 3 inches wide, filled with boiled ham, hard salami, cheeses, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and sometimes flavored with garlic and oregano.

Hoagies: built-to-order sandwiches filled with meat and cheese, as well as lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, topped off with a dash of oregano vinegar dressing on an Italian roll. A true Italian hoagie is made with Italian ham, prosciutto, salami, and provolone cheese, along with the works. It was declared the “Official Sandwich of Philadelphia” in 1992.

Hero: The prevailing New York City term for most sandwiches on an oblong roll with a general Italian flavor, in addition to the original described above. Pizzeria menus often include eggplant parmigiana, chicken parmigiana, and meatball heroes, each served with tomato sauce. Pepper and egg heroes, and potato and egg heroes are also popular.

Grinders:  The term grinder can be traced back to the east coast, where, during WWII, Italian Immigrants set up sandwich shops close to the shipyards. These supersized sandwiches were a favorite of the hard working men who ground rivets off the warships. The friendly shop owners referred to these men as grinders, and the ever-popular sandwiches also came to be known as grinders. In addition to the tradition fillings, true grinders must utilize fresh and bold ingredients like olive oil, garlic, marinated peppers and onions, basil, and the finest salami, all made fresh on the spot.

Choose your sandwich and celebrate the day!

  5. A mail order bride can “cost” much more once you factor in visits to meet her in her home country, organizing a visa, wedding, and so forth. Not to mention agency fees, translators, language classes, etc.
