★~ National Mole Day:  Celebrated from 6:02am-6:02pm

Mole Day commemorates Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 10^23), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. For a given molecule, one mole is a mass (in grams) whose number is equal to the atomic mass of the molecule. For example, the water molecule has an atomic mass of 18, therefore one mole of water weighs 18 grams. An atom of neon has an atomic mass of 20, therefore one mole of neon weighs 20 grams. In general, one mole of any substance contains Avogadro’s Number of molecules or atoms of that substance. This relationship was first discovered by Amadeo Avogadro (1776-1858). There’s the comedian, the journalist, the provocateur, and the satirist. TV Talk Show Host Day is celebrated on Johnny Carson’s birthday. ★~ Boston Creme Pie Day:

A French chef named Sanzian invented Boston cream pie in 1856. He worked at the Parker House Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1996, Boston cream pie became the official dessert of Massachusetts in a bill sponsored by Norton High School. This bill defeated both Indian Pudding and Toll House cookies as the state’s official dessert. Boston cream pie is now also a popular doughnut, coffee, and ice cream flavor.

Although it is called a pie, Boston cream pie is actually a cake. It consists of two round layers of sponge cake with a thick vanilla custard filling. It is usually frosted with a chocolate glaze but it can also be topped with confectionary sugar.

Enjoy a big slice today to celebrate National Boston Cream Pie Day! I heart Bakers Squares Boston Creme Pie! But I’m told Betty Crocker has a recipe for a yummy Boston Crème  pie.

♥~ 2001 – A relieved NASA team celebrated as the 2001 Mars Odyssey slipped into orbit around the Red Planet, two years after back-to-back failures by Mars missions.

♥~ 2007 – A copy of the Quran, written in 1203, believed to be the oldest known complete copy, sold at auction in London for more than $2.3 million. And a nearly complete, 10th-century Kufic Quran, thought to be from North Africa or the near East, sold for $1,870,000.

★~Born Today:

♥~ 1925 – Johnny Carson born in Corning, Iowa. He grew up an extremely shy boy, but when he was 12 years old he happened to read a how-to book about magic tricks and he later said that it was the discovery of magic that helped him relate to people. He started writing jokes in college and went on to host a TV game show called “Who Do You Trust?” But his big break came when he took over hosting The Tonight Show from Jack Parr in 1962. By the mid-1970s, more than 15 million people were watching The Tonight Show every night before they went to bed. When he retired in 1992, he had been on the air for 30 years.

♥~ 1942 –  Michael Crichton,  best selling novelist. His books include Jurassic Park(1990), Rising Sun (1992), and State of Fear (2004). Michael Crichton managed to be a huge success not only in the literary world, but also in film and television. He was a Hollywood director, and he wrote the screenplay for some of the film adaptations of his books, including Jurassic Park. He also created the hit TV series E.R.

♥~1961 –  Laurie Halse Anderson – Laurie Halse Anderson, New York Times-bestselling author, writes for kids of all ages.  Known for tackling tough subjects with humor and sensitivity, her work has earned numerous ALA and state awards. Two of her books, Speak and Chains, were National Book Award finalists.

★~ Did You Know:  Talk Show Trivia

♥~  In a January 2005 interview, former Late Show with David Letterman producer Peter Lassally revealed that the former Tonight Show superstar would send Letterman jokes for his monologue, well after his retirement and Letterman’s move from NBC to CBS.

♥~ The fine folks over at The Tonight Show were the first to give viewers the opportunity to watch Jay Leno crack wise and interview celebrities in high-definition television. The show started broadcasting in HD on April 26, 1999.

♥~ Conan O’Brien was the first talk show host to pull off a completely animated version of Late Night. The May 15, 2003, show was entirely filmed with animated clay and featured celebrity guests Johnny Knoxville and Richard Lewis, with musical guest, David Bowie. ♥~ The epitaph on Merv Griffin’s tombstone reads, “I will not be right back after this message.”

♥~ President Barack Obama is the first sitting president to be an actual talk show guest. Obama appeared on the March 17, 2009, episode of The Tonight Show.

♥~  Talk show guest Jerome Rodale died on the ‘The Dick Cavett Show’, Rodale was a self-proclaimed “longevity guru” and based his life and career on teaching people how to stay healthy and live a long life. He expected to live to 100 or more. But the 72-year-old didn’t make it past the final commercial break during an appearance on Dick Cavett’s show. He let out a groan, to which Cavett replied, “We’re not boring you, are we?” Nope. Rodale died from a heart attack right then and there.  The show was never broadcast. The irony is that he’d quipped a day before to a magazine journalist that he’d expected to live past his 100th birthday.

♥~ Victoria Secret, the famous lingerie company bestowed its Sexiest Sense of Humor award on Ellen DeGeneres. in 2010. “I’m honored to this award because it’s hard to be sexy and funny at the same time,” Ellen said at the time. “Ask Gallagher.”
