★~ National Cowboy Day:

Cowboy

National Day of the Cowboy was started as a way to contribute to the preservation of America’s rich cowboy heritage. To celebrate you can dress like a cowboy, host a hoedown, attend a rodeo, go horseback riding, or curl up on the couch to watch your favorite Westerns.

★~ Walk on Stilts Day:

Walk on Stilts

Walk On Stilts Day encourages you to buy a set of stilts (if you don’t already own one) and learn to  walk , spin and dance atop them. But watch out for potholes!

Did you know that some people used to actually need stilts? It’s true—in the 19th century, stilt-walking occurred in Landes, France. Residents of this marshy area took up stilt-walking as a way to navigate the wet terrain. It is said that they performed all of their daily outdoor tasks on stilts!

★~ Crème Brûlée Day:

Although the English referred to this sweet little ramekin full of love as “burnt cream,” the name crème brûlée just sounds so much better, don’t you think?

The origins of this dish are a bit hazy, but the name first appeared in Francois Massialot’s cookbook in 1691. “Trinity Cream” or Cambridge Burnt Cream became a traditional dessert at Trinity College in Cambridge during 1879 when a version of crème brûlée was served with the college arms branded into the cream top. Now that’s some serious college pride.

The five-ingredient French delicacy, rich vanilla custard is topped with a hard “burnt sugar” top. If you decide to make crème brûlée be mindful with that torch – you don’t want to be the one that ends up crispy. Crème BrûléeRecipe

★~ Scotch Day:

Today is good news for Scotch Drinkers. The first written record of Scotch whisky originates from around the time Columbus sailed to the Americas. But the distilled spirit of Celtic origin probably evolved from earlier, more primitive efforts at producing grain alcohol. Celebrate Scotch day by enjoying a taste of Scotch and see for yourself why Scotland’s is so proud of what some say call their greatest export!

♥~ Bear Family Reunited:  Game warden Adam Smith had to rescue a bear cub from a bear-proof dumpster in Azusa, California. The problem was that someone had left the lid open and when the lid  slammed shut, one of two cubs was inside. The mother bear tried to lift the lid, but …it’s a bear-proof dumpster. Smith used his lights and siren to keep the mother bear away while he raised the dumpster lid. The cub jumped out and headed off into the darkness with his mother and sibling. You can see a video of the rescue above.

♥~ U.S City With The Worst Drivers:  If opinions counted, the city with the worst drivers would be the city that has the most people surveyed, because everyone is sure their home town has the worst drivers. But Slate combined figures for fatalities, drunk driving fatalities, pedestrian strikes, and insurance claims, and ranked the cities with a population over 150,000 people with the worst drivers. Three of the top five cities are in Florida. Miami ranked at the top of this admittedly unscientific ranking, followed by Philadelphia, Hialeah, Tampa, and Baltimore.

♥~ Man Consumed  $102,000 In Historic Whiskey:  Patricia Hill owned 104 bottles of valuable whiskey that came with the mansion she bought and converted to a historic inn in Pittsburgh. The Old Farm Pure Rye Whiskey was distilled in 1912, and was hidden under a staircase. The property had been sold several times before Hill found it during a remodeling project.

[Police chief] Pritts said that Hill put the whiskey bottles in the basement while the main floors were being renovated. John Saunders, 62, was a caretaker who lived in the basement and was expected to safeguard the booze.

“You know, to watch over them and keep them secure. I guess that was a mistake,” Pritts said.

Hill discovered that 52 of the bottles had been emptied in March 2012, and reported it to police. All four cases of whiskey had been emptied within about a year, Pitts said.

Saunders denied that he consumed the vintage alcohol, but police tested the empty bottles to see if they matched Saunders’ DNA. After seven months of testing, police confirmed that Saunders’ DNA was found on the bottles, and charged him with felony theft and receiving stolen property, Pritts said.

The whiskey was valued at $102,400, but it’s doubtful that restitution will be made. Saunders’ attorney told the court that Saunders is waiting for a liver transplant.

♥~ No Shoes, No Shirt, No Horse:  A woman in Whitefield, Greater Manchester, UK, rode up to a McDonalds drive-through on a horse. The drive-through clerk refused to serve her, citing company policy. That apparently did not sit well with the woman, because she then rode her horse inside McDonalds. The horse pooped on the floor, the police were called, and she was issued a ticket. Officers arrived at the location and the woman was issued a fixed penalty notice for causing alarm and distress to other customers and staff.

I’ll be back to share Cronut pictures in a little bit. Right now, I need to give my attention to the Bark of the Wild.

What are your plans for this Super Saturday?

10 thoughts on “National Cowboy Day, Walk on Stilts Day, Crème Brûlée Day, Scotch Day

  1. Morno,
I’ll toast the west with Scotch and skip stilts, and Cream Brulee.
Wonder if the Scotch thief knew he had liver cancer before he drank the Scotch?
Golf this morno, and household chores this afternoon.
    Have a good one.

  2. Good Morno,
My kids have stilts and love playing on them. So far no injuries. Cowboy day, Scotch Day and Cream Brulee day seems like an odd pairing, but I don’t mind watching a Western, sipping a scotch and spooning Cream Brulee into my mouth. I’m easy.
Chores and a family dinner planned for today although the agenda could change since it’s wet and soggy outside.
    Have a good one.

    • You sure know how to make the best of every celebration. I loved my childhood stilts. Hope you enjoyed your day despite the weather.

  3. i’m not much of a western girl. have never had crème brulee. 1st i heard of a cronut was right here a few days ago. i guess i haven’t lived! scotch though…!
even with 2 functioning legs, i’m doubting my stilts agility!
good for the citizen who called & the game warden for opening the dumpster lid!
i cannot believe my city is not on that list of bad drivers! yeah, i’m sure all of us feel the same.
chores today, needed to shop for another wedding gift. not a thrilling weekend, but happy for it!
    good day!

    • Cronuts! Very good and I still need to post the pictures. These last few days have been a whirl wind.
Your city? Traffic was the bane of my existence, but never noticed the drivers were bad. Very interesting. Of-Course when I lived there I was so thrilled to be in the big city, I loved the gum on the street.
Stilts aren’t that hard and I bet you have good balance. However, under the circumstances, keeping both feet on the ground seems like the best plan 😀

  4. Now you’ve got me wondering what happened to my cowboy boots?? I’ve still got my hats (two, at last count), and the six-shooters from when I was little, though.

Not much into Scotch or creme brulee. I always loved Bugs Bunny and was in awe of his ability to slip out of tight places.

None of the places on the list of cities with the worst drivers are places I’ve lived. Nevertheless, I can assure you that some of the places I HAVE lived have worse drivers than those places, ha!

    • I hope you find them. I still have and wear Tony Lama cowboy boots from when I was 16. They are in great shape and they were really truly working and riding boots. I don’t think I ever had a 6 shooter.
Guess, it’s true everyone thinks there city has the worst drivers.

  5. Cute bear video with a happy ending…
While in Ruidoso I purchased 2 Remmington horsey prints..when I was looking for a new home for them on my walls I realized that almost every piece of framed art in my house includes horses . Does that mean I am a fan of the America Cowboy Heritage ?
I am sure El Paso should be on that “worst driver” list . You would not believe El Paso drivers.
    No Scotch for me !

    • Either a fan or you really like horses 😀 Both? Chicago has awful parking but the drivers are pretty good. El Paso is one of the safest places to live—just not drive in, I guess.
