★~ Today’s Quote:

The ultimate goal of the educational system is to shift to the individual the burden of pursing his own education. This will not be a widely shared pursuit until we get over our odd conviction that education is what goes on in school buildings and nowhere else. ~ John W. Gardner

★~ Houseplant Appreciation Day:

paperwhites

Time to give the loyal houseplant a little TLC now that the holidays are over and the fussy poinsettia has wilted. I start growing paperwhites in my window in late December so they will bloom the first part of January when I need a little prettiness, and the lovely smell will waft through the house. I have two other houseplants. One has lasted 27 years and I have no idea what kind of plant she is, but I call her Longevity since she has stuck with me through thick and thin. Oddly enough, the second plant was gifted to me shortly after El Morno friend Debbie blogged about her shamrock plant Fiona (real name oxalis—the plant’s real name, not Debbie’s). I named my oxalis Clover since her leaves are shaped like clovers. Since my houseplants don’t need watering, I’ll show my appreciation by thanking them for hanging in there with me despite my rather feeble gardening attempts.

Here is how I start my paperwhites (easy peasey)

Materials:
Paperwhite bulbs: I plant lots and lots!
gravel, small stones, or glass pebbles
mason jars (I plant several bulbs per jar so I use the large Mason jars-any jar or container will do)

Add a layer of small stones to the container: Paperwhites do not need soil. They just need the stones to support their roots and to help hold them upright.

Center and place the Paperwhite bulb on top of the stones with the tip up. (kitchen tongs can help with this)

Water and put in a moderately sunny spot. Paperwhites will bloom in about 6 weeks. I turn the jars when they start to bloom so they will grow straighter.

Pecular City

It’s our day to shine! Both Odd and Peculiar celebrate ‘different.’ Of-course, I’m using the collective “Our” because I know you’re a bit “Odd” too in your own peculiar wonderful way!  I like that about you…Odd Loves Company! Happy Peculiar People Day! May the odds be with you.

★~Bittersweet Chocolate Day:

bittersweet_chocolate

Bittersweet chocolate is a sweetened form of dark chocolate that does not contain milk. According to FDA standards, bittersweet chocolate must contain at least 35 percent chocolate liquor. The more chocolate liquor that’s added, the more intense the bitter flavor of the chocolate.

Research shows that daily consumption of bittersweet chocolate is actually quite good for you. It contains antioxidant compounds and flavonoids, helps lower blood pressure, and helps protect your heart.

So go ahead and eat a few pieces of bittersweet chocolate, and perhaps chase it down with a glass of heart-healthy wine.

★~ Good to Know:

Researcher Kamal Meattle lives in New Delhi — and breathing the air landed him in the doctor’s office with diminished lung capacity. He embarked on research to find a way to clean the air around him using houseplants (much of this work had already been done by NASA and the folks at Biosphere 2). In this four-minute talk, Meattle share’s the very simple results — using just three species of common houseplants, you can create measurably cleaner indoor air, increase oxygen levels, and decrease indoor air pollution. Breathing easier, does take some work (and a lot of plants — a single person requires more than ten large houseplants!), but, hey, you can not underestimate being able to breath. I might try one or two and see how it goes. Can’t hurt, right?

The basics of Meattle’s recommendations:

“The Living Room Plant”
Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens)
The workhouse of Meattle’s plan. Get four of these per person, and wipe the leaves regularly to clean off crud. Needs occasional time outdoors.
Pets: Considered safe if consumed by cats or dogs, states the American Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals or ASPCA.

“The Bedroom Plant”
Mother-in-law’s Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata)
Works at night, so put them in the bedroom.
Mother-in-law’s tongue plant is one of, if not the, easiest plants to grow and the only way to kill it is to over water it, fertilize it or allow it to freeze.
Pets: Can be toxic: Generally mild to moderate, depending on the amount ingested.

“The Specialist Plant”
Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum)
Filters out formaldehyde and other nasty stuff.
Pets: Considered a safe houseplant for dogs and cats.

  1. Good Morno,
Looks like a good day. Peculiar? Not me. I like milk chocolate more than bittersweet but those brownies look good. Convoy brought back memories of good times.
I have a houseplant that has stuck around a long time. I’ll toss a cup of water in his pot today and thank him for his years of service. I can’t remember how or when he came to live with me but he must be pretty hearty.
TGIF. It was a long week.

    • 10-40 good buddy. I think we need your sister to comment on the peculiar question.
I think the weekend was a welcome sight for a lot of people–winter is wearing us out.

  2. Morno,
It was a long week even with a cold day thrown in. Finally warming up, tho. My house plants are my surrogate pets and I kind of fuss over them. The Gardenia is temperamental but I baby her because she so fragrant. My ficus tree needs less attention but is still finicky and the leaves will turn yellow and drop off if I ignore him for too long. I’ll have to try the paperwhites next year. They do smell great! My husband would say I was peculiar about my houseplants.

    TTFN

    • I love the smell of Gardenia. My Mom had one for years. I’d never have the nerve to grow one. Sounds like your plants get a lot of TLC—I bet paperwhites would stick around forever–they make nice hostess gifts too!

  3. I love houseplants even though I don’t have any ..I used to have tons of them..I must purchase some right away…
    Don’t like bittersweet chocolate…only milk chocolate .
    How am I peculiar ? Who isn’t ?
I hope my comment arrives today..for some reason my comments never arrive …wonder where they go.
    This is a test.. 😯

    • I see you! So delightful. Just sent a ANOTHER message to powers to be….fingers crossed they can solve the problem this time!
      Maybe a nice full fern?

  4. Howdy and good morno to you! I love my houseplants but they have been sorely neglected since I brought them in from the sunroom. I got them a grow light and everything but …..I still neglect them. So sad. Don’t turn me into the plant police, please.

    • Can your hear the Dragnet theme song playing? Hope you watered and plucked a few leaves–you might be shown mercy. I have a plant light too and I love standing under it. I think I’m taller and I know I’m more robust.

  5. milk chocolate for me, too.
i was not the one with a green thumb……that was john. to live at my house, trees, shrubs, plants, flowers had better be beyond hearty!
peculiar…..people who know me label me anal, neurotic. guilty as charged. things are done a certain way because it works! done!
34* sure is balmy for the windy city.
    good day!

    • Well, I won’t argue. Nope. Not me. Let’s try a Mother-in-Laws tongue—cleaner air and a little green…of-course she really don’t need green.
Too balmy, the snow is melting too fast.

  6. Golly, thanks for remembering my Fiona! Before Christmas, as a matter of fact, she burst out in beautiful blooms (I’d meant to do a post about it, with pictures, but that never happened).
I love my houseplants and tend to have a fairly green thumb. My spider plants, my lucky Feng Shui bamboo, Fiona — all special. I’ve never tried mother-in-law’s tongue, though I’ve heard it’s easy to grow. Maybe I ought to give it a whirl!
It’s a rainy day here — nasty, for a long-haired Sheltie who refuses to go outside in his cute little coat! Sigh.

    • Clover blooms on an Odd schedule. You have better luck with your Bamboo than I do….although the money tree limps along–kind of like my finances.
Dallas has a coat? He must roast in it….although I am certain he looks dashing.

  7. I’ve had a Mother in Law’s plant for 35 years. I’ve lugged it everywhere. I do bring it in for the Winter since we moved up here. Very hardy plant.
Today was the best and the worst.
I’m sure I’m not even a tiny bit peculiar!
