★~ Today’s Quote: “Way, way back in the day, like in the 1990s, if you wanted to tell everyone you ate waffles for breakfast, you couldn’t just go on the Internet and tweet it out. There was only one way to do it. You had to go outside and scream at the top of your lungs, ‘I ate waffles for breakfast!’ That’s why so many people ended up in institutions. They seemed crazy, but when you think about it, they were just ahead of their time.” ― Ellen DeGeneres
★~ Australian Day:
On January 26, 1788, the 11 ships of Great Britain’s First Fleet arrived at Port Jackson, which now contains Sydney Harbor. The First Fleet was led by Captain Arthur Philip, who established the Colony of New South Wales, the first penal colony in Australia. By 1808, January 26 was being celebrated by Australians as “First Landing Day” or “Foundation Day” with drinking and merriment. Thirty years after the arrival of the First Fleet, in 1818, the Governor of Australia ordered a 30-gun salute, hosted a dinner ball at Government House, and declared a holiday. Today, Aussies gathered in their homes, backyards, and at the beach to reflect on the true meaning of Australianness. More often than not, this amounts to firing up the barby, drinking large quantities of beer, and celebrating Australia with friends.
★~Spouses Day:
Spouse’s Day is a time to enjoy and appreciate your better half. . .
We had a power outage at my place this morning and my PC, laptop,
TV, DVD, iPad, iPod, and my new surround sound music system were all shut down. Then I discovered that my iPhone battery was flat and to top it off it was raining outside, so I couldn’t play garden.
I went into the kitchen to make coffee and then I remembered that this also needs power, so I talked with my husband for a few hours.
He seems like a nice person.
★~ Peanut Brittle Day:
Brittle was one of the first types of candy ever made. Many ancient cultures that had access to molasses, honey, or sugar, produced some form of it.The first peanut brittle recipe appeared in an American cookbook, but the exact origin of the confection is uncertain. According to one account, peanut brittle was a Celtic dessert. The Celts covered peanuts in sugar and baked them, and this eventually evolved into a caramel bark. Peanut brittle can be a little tricky to make. Most recipes call for a candy thermometer to allow the baker to regulate the exact temperature, and the results can be affected by weather! If brittle is made on a humid day it will not hold its shape. See’s Candies makes a wonderful peanut brittle but if you are inspired to make some this recipe is rated 5 stars by intermediate cooks. I’m not sure what my plans for the day will be. The temp is 10 above and feels like 6 below so it’s doubtful I will be engaging in outdoor activities. What are your plans for today?
Odd Loves Company!
Peanut Brittle use to be one of my favorites but my teeth just can’t handle it anymore.
Sounds like Australian day is a lot like our 4th of July.
The news just gets better and better. The news greats are turning over in their graves.
No big plans. Dinner at my sisters. I have a few chores to get done, and some sleep to catch up on.
Have a good one.
I think it is a lot like the 4th of July.
What!! You don’t consider Justin B arrest breaking news??
What did you take for dessert?
Happy Australia Day !!! Bet your Aussie friend is celebrating!!!! 🙂
Antoinette is celebrating in Mansfield. The mountains and the bush and reported she had to stop for a huge wombat! I hope she took pictures.
Is that Ellen with the schoolbag and sack lunch?? Golly, have times changed!
Love Phantom of the Opera — Domer’s high school band used that theme one year, and it was pretty impressive.
Happy Australia Day, though I’m a bit concerned about celebrating anything with cockroaches. Eeek!
Of course I don’t eat peanut brittle — nuts, you know — even if some of my forebears might have created it!
It is. I must have forgotten to label the picture.
I’m pretty sure the cockroaches are a very small part of Aussie day so no worries!
Phantom is wonderful. I hope to take Cole to see before it leaves Chicago the end of May.
Nice that the wife had some time to spend conversing with her husband. Seemed to have agreed with her.
Yay for MI joining up! Many Indian references in the state.
Got a lot done yesterday so today was a more relaxing day. Strange without football though.
Nice day today weather wise. May not be all that terrific Tuesday if what they’re saying materializes.
Good evening!
Well, buy bread and milk. I have no idea why but that is what they buy in the North. Cole and I bought chips, dip, little hotdogs, ice cream….you get the idea. He is home for another cold day tomorrow and if the blowing and drifts outside are any indication we are going to socked in for awhile.
Glad you had a chance to rest on the seventh day!
