World Spay Day

World Spay Day is an annual campaign of The HSUS and Humane Society International that shines a spotlight on spay/neuter as a way to save the lives of companion animals, community (feral and stray) cats, and street dogs who might otherwise be put down in a shelter or killed on the street. ★~ National Chocolate Covered Peanuts Day!

chocolate covered nuts

Nuts have been a staple of the human diet for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks and Romans were fond of the walnut, Native Americans enjoyed the pecan, and the Chinese believed that the hazelnut was one of the five sacred nourishments. People also believed that chocolate had divine properties.

The Aztecs and Mayans prepared drinking chocolate for all their sacred rituals. In the seventeenth century, chocolate became a very fashionable drink throughout Europe, and people soon learned that everything tastes better when it’s covered in chocolate. By the middle of the nineteenth century, it was a common practice to dip items like pretzels, nuts, and fruits into melted chocolate.

Celebrate National Chocolate Covered Nuts Day with your favorite chocolate and nut combination! Or your favorite chocolate and nut!  If you can not eat nuts have a piece of Chocolate Covered fruit instead.

★~ Today in History:

pistol

♥~ 1836 – Sure as shootin’, Samuel Colt received a patent for a pistol that used a revolving cylinder containing powder and bullets in six individual tubes. (Pre-assembled loads [cartridges] came later.) Up to that time, the single-shot flintlock pistol had been the fastest firearm around. Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1855 and some 30 million Colt pistols and rifles have been sold since.

♥~ 1924 –Ty Cobb, one of the legends of baseball, issued an edict to his team, the Detroit Tigers, outlawing the playing of golf during training camp. A report in the Detroit Free Press said that Cobb went so far as to confiscate players’ golf clubs! Guess he was a little ‘teed off’.

♥~ 1957 – Buddy Holly and The Crickets traveled to Clovis, NM, to record That’ll Be the Day. I have been to Clovis, New Mexico. I bet the town is still talking about “that day.”

♥~ 2001 – The Chinese-language film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon became the most lucrative foreign movie in U.S. history. This was the first movie Cole ever saw-he loved it.  I know most parents start with Disney…we were Odd.

♥~ 2010 – A 1939 comic book, Detective Comics No. 27, in which the Batman makes his debut, sold at a Dallas auction for $1,075,500. The price was about $75,000 more than the record set just three days earlier by a Superman comic book.

♥~ 1913 – Jim Backus, actor, Mr Magoo. Thurston Howell III in CBS-TV’s Gilligan’s Island series  died July 3, 1989;

♥~ 1935 – Sally Jessy Raphael (Sally Lowenthal) TV talk-show host: Sally Jessy Raphaël

♥~ 1943 –  George Harrison –  He was the youngest of Harold and Louise Harrison’s four children, and the youngest of the four Beatles as well. He joined the band when he was only 14, and there was a tendency ever after for his bandmates to treat him like a tag-along kid brother. He was often crowded out of the limelight by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and he was only granted two tracks on every album. When the band split in 1970, he finally recorded and released several of the songs from this backlog; he had enough material for a triple album, 1970’s All Things Must Pass.

♥~ 1971 – Sean Astin actor: The Goonies, The B.R.A.T. Patrol, The War of the Roses, Encino Man, Bulworth, Icebreaker, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

This week Venus is forming a beautiful sextile (when two planets are about 60 degrees apart) to practical Saturn thereby inviting  us to create something or somethings  that will POSITIVELY influence our lives. Go for it!

I am heading downtown to pick up two Bouvier des flandres and  drop off a Maltese to his family. My van tire looks a little low so I’ll need to add air and see how it goes….did I mention Chicago Pot holes and deep ridges in ice?? The sun is out, tho. THE SUN.

Have a terrific Tuesday! However,  if Tuesday is falling short of terrific, feel free to rant, it is  is rant Tuesday!

  1. I had read about happiest and least happy states, and, if I recall correctly, my most recent home state of Kentucky was the LEAST happy. Sad, isn’t it? No wonder we moved to South America. Have a happy day, Katybeth!

    Hugs from Ecuador,
    Kathy

    • Kentucky does rank low. I wonder why? It is a pretty state and it has the Derby and Mint Julips! I object. But until we get to the bottom of this perhaps you need to stay in South America.
Off to read your latest post about Dad and the mob… Sounds great!

  2. I’ll just take my chocolate without nuts, thank you (that’s the way I eat chocolate-covered peanuts anyway, ha!)

Hard to believe that North Dakota folks are the happiest in the nation — of course, I’ve never been there, but I can’t imagine wanting to go either!

Am puzzled about Ty Cobb and waiting for Mike to explain. I’ll bet something about playing golf interferes with playing baseball. Am I right?

    • There are very few people in ND and they are spread out?
Wait you don’t want to visit ND Dinosaur Museum? or what about the World’s Largest Buffalo monument? And you are going to pass on the Paul Broste Rock Museum in Parshal?? The largest rock museum!! Perhaps you want to reconsider your trip.
Golf effects the players baseball swing according to Mike. Yes you are right! Give the lady chocolate–hold the peanut.

  3. I’m all in for our Days today.
Miss George Harrison. Gone too soon.
Will check out the video later. Eager to see how happy I actually am!
No rants today. Hope it rains because I fertilized last night.
    Good morning!
