★~ Passover:

Passover is an eight-day Jewish festival that celebrates the emancipation of the Israelites. Jewish families usually celebrate Passover on the first two nights of the holiday. They hold seders to retell the story of the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and to enjoy a festive meal eaten in remembrance of their ancestors’ hardships. During the meal, the youngest child asks the adults four questions about the significance of the Passover symbols.

Traditional Passover food is kosher and does not include any “chametz.” Chametz are leavened foods made with wheat, barley, or rye. When the Israelites fled Egypt, they could not wait for their bread to rise. Modern-day Jewish families eat unleavened matzo bread during Passover to honor this part of their history

This sweet delight has the best of both worlds—a smooth filling and a crunchy top. Traditional recipes for pecan pie call for ingredients like roasted pecans, butter, eggs, and brown sugar, but there are many different variations. Some people even choose to add chocolate or bourbon.

Most Americans consider pecan pie to be a Southern specialty, but this type of pie is actually French in origin. French immigrants living in New Orleans baked the first American pecan pies. Many years later, the Karo company popularized the dessert with recipes that called for the company’s corn syrup.

♥~ 1828:  Noah Webster published his magnum opus, An American Dictionary of the English Language. A child of the American Revolution, Noah Webster fervently believed in American uniqueness. He also believed that language shapes culture, and the United States needs to have its own collection of language, matching uniquely American habits of grammar, spelling and pronunciation. The legendary wordsmith began working on just such a collection in his 20s.

♥~ 1865: President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.

♥~ 1902 – James Cash Penney opened his first store — in Kemmerer Wyoming. In partnership with Thomas M. Callahan and William Guy Johnson, J.C. Penney named the store Golden Rule. The dry goods and clothing store had a first-year profit of $8,514.36 on sales of $28,898.

♥~ 1980 – Stan Mikita   generally regarded as the best centre of the 1960s, retired his number 21, after 21 years with the Chicago Black Hawks. His #21 jersey became the first Blackhawks number to be retired.

♥~ 1979- The Doobie Brothers went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘What A Fool Believes’, the group’s second US No.1.

♥~1866 – Anne Sullivan (Macy) ‘The Miracle Worker’: famous for teaching the blind and deaf Helen Keller to read, write and speak; died Oct 20, 1936

♥~1912 –  Robert Doisneau  was one of the original street photographers — he wandered the streets of Paris snapping away with his Leica camera decades before thousands of Brooklyn’s hipsters would do the same throughout Williamsburg. Le baiser de l’hôtel de ville (Kiss by the Town Hall),” a photograph of lovers kissing in the streets of Paris taken in 1950, became his most famous work.
