★~ Sunglasses Day:
It’s Sunglasses Day! Some say, sunglasses are quite possibly the most important fashion accessory of the entire summer season. Humans have been wearing protective eyewear for centuries, but the stylish designs we’re accustomed to today are a much more recent invention.
During the prehistoric era, the Inuit people used walrus ivory to create sun goggles, which blocked out the powerful rays of sun that reflected off the snow and ice. By the 1700s, doctors were regularly prescribing tinted glasses for vision correction, and by the 1930s the Foster Grant company was selling modern-day sunglasses on the boardwalk of Atlantic City, New Jersey. On the eve of World War II, a little company called Ray Ban began producing anti-glare sunglasses for pilots. “Aviators” became the first commercially successful sunglasses.
To celebrate Sunglasses Day, sport your favorite shades all day long! Or perhaps, you can suggest where I might have left my sunglasses.
★~ Orange Blossom Day:
The popular Orange Blossom cocktail was invented way back during Prohibition, to soften the taste of bathtub gin. Because of its intoxicating fragrance, the blossom is also used as an additive to honey, tea, incense, perfumes, and in decorative floral arrangements for weddings around the world. Celebrate today by enjoying an Orange Blossom Cocktail, adding the fragrant orange blossom to your humble abode, or by just calling a friend in Florida and wishing them “Happy Orange Blossom Day”—after all, the Orange Blossom is Florida’s state flower. Happy Orange Blossom Day, Dear Cousin!
★~ Today in History:
★~ 1859- HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU”. The melody of probably the most often sung song in the world, “Happy Birthday to You,” was composed by Mildred J. Hill, a schoolteacher born at Louisville, KY, on this date. Her younger sister, Patty Smith Hill, was the author of the lyrics, which were first published in 1893 as “Good Morning to All,” a classroom greeting published in the book Song Stories for the Sunday School. The lyrics were amended in 1924 to include a stanza beginning “Happy Birthday to You.” Now it is sung somewhere in the world every minute of the day. Although the authors are believed to have earned very little from the song, reportedly it later generated about $1 million a year for its copyright owner. Mildred Hill died at Chicago, IL, June 5, 1916, without knowing that her melody would become the world’s most popular song. This is a cool (and kind of scary) birthday search.
♥~ 1966 – Dark Shadows began its popular run as a daily serial on ABC-TV. The show became a popular late-afternoon favorite for several seasons, then reappeared as a prime-time revival for a short, two-month run in 1991.
♥~ 1970 – The Jackson 5: Marlon, Tito, Jackie, Randy and Michael, jumped to number one on the music charts with The Love You Save. The song stayed at the top of the charts for two weeks.
★~Born Today:
♥~ 1880 –Helen Keller author, educator; advocated new policies to help the blind live in normal surroundings “All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming.” ; died Jun 1, 1968.
♥~ 1927 – Bob Keeshan children’s TV host: Captain Kangaroo Clown Hall of Famer; died Jan 23, 2004
♥~ 1942 – Bruce Johnson, Bruce Johnston, Rock musician, singer The Beach Boys

People’s gas is paying me a visit this morno. I received several urgent letters requesting an appointment so they could check out the gas meter at a time convenient for me (as long as convenient for me falls between 8am – 3pm). When I asked the appointment taker to narrow the time to morning or afternoon she informed she wasn’t authorized to offer that option, but she was willing to transfer me to her manager, I declined. I’d rather stay home the whole day then sit on hold for 30 plus minutes listening to awful, fuzzy music, being thanked for my patience with a 90% chance of being disconnected. So I’ll wait and make the best of it with lemonade, a good book, my camera and campers gracing the yard on a beautiful day. Maybe, I’ll even get lucky and Peoples Gas will show up for the appointment. Stranger things have happened.
Hope you have a Fab Friday,
Odd Loves Company
How clever….looks like that potato “peeler” worked…lol
Happy Birthday to Happy Birthday To You…. 😀
We wanted to try it this weekend but didn’t have a chance. Maybe over the 4th. Something to look forward too! And Happy Birthday to you too. 😀
Gosh, who knew there was a day to honor sunglasses? I’m gonna sound like my grandmother, but what will they think of next! More seriously, I totally adore the Helen Keller quote–lots of suffer–lots of overcoming! No one can say it better than she!
Good luck with the gas man!
Hugs from Ecuador,
Kathy
Oh Kathy, there is a day for everything…you name it we’ll celebrate it. :-D.
You are very right…Helen Keller does have a way of putting things into perspective.
Better late than never. We were out on the boat all day and then out to dinner.
I wore sunglasses and celebrated a fishing friends birthday. So I guess even tho I am late the day was celebrated appropriately.
Hope your gas man showed up and you didn’t have to sit around and wait all day.
Sounds like you are on top of things. Good work.
Hope you’re having fun.
Playing catchup again — went to cheer up a friend and share a luncheon at a Chinese restaurant. If Chinese food can’t make you feel better, nothing can!
Sorry to hear you had issues that needed the gas man’s expertise. Hope all is resolved satisfactorily.
Yes, I’m a HUGE fan of sunglasses!
I am asking for a good pair of sunglasses for my birthday and will hang on to them for dear life.
They are going to do some major digging on the street in August and move our meters outside. As long as they take care with my trees–all will be well.
Chinese food–the best. Very cheerful!
