(The Wiesen Viaduct is a single track limestone railway viaduct. It spans the Landwasser River southwest of the hamlet of Wiesen, in the Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. Designed by the then chief engineer of the Rhaetian Railway, Henning Friedrich, it was built between 1906 and 1909 under the supervision of another engineer, Hans Studer. The Rhaetian Railway still owns and uses it today. The viaduct is 289 ft high, 669 ft long, and has a main span of  180 ft, which makes it one of the longest main spans of any masonry bridge.)

★~ Super Bowl Sunday: 

The Super Bowl is the most watched American television broadcast, drawing more than 160 million viewers. That’s more than half the population! As a result, it also garners the highest advertising prices in the industry.

Beyond the game itself, the Super Bowl is famous for its commercials, its halftime show, and its ability to bring people together to celebrate. People consume 14,500 tons of chips and 8 million pounds of guacamole on Super Bowl Sunday. In fact, it is one of the biggest food consumption holidays, second only to Thanksgiving.

★~ Baked Alaska Day:

Baked Alaska, also called glace au four, omelette a la norvegienne, or Norwegian omelette,  a dessert made with ice cream, sponge cake, and toasted meringue and is served with a long culinary history.

The concept of serving cream and cake together dates back to the Renaissance. The cooks of the era were the first to adorn their baked goods with a whipped topping. This laid the foundation for Baked Alaska, but it does not account for two of the dessert’s distinguishing characteristics—temperature and texture.

The Chinese were the first culture to cook pastry over an ice cream filling.  Credit is also due to the American physicist Benjamin Thompson, who experimented with the heat resistance of beaten egg whites and discovered how to make meringue.

♥~ 1901 – (William) Clark Gable actor; Gable’s most famous role in a 30-year movie career was as Rhett Butler in the Civil War romance “Gone With the Wind” in which he starred with Vivian Leigh.  In 1999, the American Film Institute named Gable seventh among the greatest male stars of all time. The Patriots final game at Alumni Stadium was rudely interrupted when a popcorn machine caught fire, scattering a large section of the crowd (thankfully, no one was hurt).

Upon leaving for Foxborough, MA in 1971, they were re-christened as “The Bay State Patriots.” The name was rejected when people pointed out the abbreviation would be “The B.S. Patriots.”

On a harsh, wintry day in 1982, snowplow operator Mark Henderson become a New England folk hero by clearing a patch of field for Patriots kicker John Smith, whose late field goal slew the visiting Miami Dolphins. Incidentally, at the time, Henderson was there on work release from prison.

He may be a future Hall of Famer, but during his collegiate days, nobody would’ve mistaken Patriots QB Tom Brady for a big-shot. At one point, Brady was the seventh quarterback on the University of Michigan’s depth chart.

I am writing this on Saturday night whilst the snow is lightly falling. Chicago expected snowfall is between 11-13 inches ending on Monday. Did I mention I was leaving on a jet plane for Albuquerque on Monday? Usually I love weather, thunderstorms, blizzards, and polar vortex’s. I surrender and enjoy. But I would really like to leave as planned on Monday. So while I generally don’t prepare for weather beyond making sure we have hot chocolate and mini marshmallows, for this pending blizzard, I bought food, made bread, baked chocolate chip cookies and made sure the snow blower is gassed up. Yes, I am trying to fool mother nature with a little bit of reverse psychology, in hope that she will not snow on my travel plans. . .to be continued.
