Today’s Quote: “Uber, the world’s largest taxi company, owns no vehicles. Facebook, the world’s most popular media owner, creates no content. Alibaba, the most valuable retailer, has no inventory. And Airbnb, the world’s largest accommodation provider, owns no real estate. Something interesting is happening.” (New York Times column by Tom Friedman, in which he quotes an essay by Tom Goodwin of Havas Media)
★~ Salsa Day
Salsa! .The kind they serve in restaurants with chips. The kind they sell in jars. The kind you eat during a football game. The kind that’s replaced ketchup as the number one condiment in America. Here are a few links to recipes that you can salsa with this weekend and over the summer. Olé!
Pomegranate Pear Salsa: Who says tomatoes need to be in the mix when making salsa? Pomegranate and pear take center stage while the usual suspects — red onion and cilantro — cut some of the inherent sweetness.
Pineapple Habanero Salsa: Sweet and spicy is a quintessential flavor pairing.
Watermelon Pico de Gallo: A yummy sweet take on pico de gallo. Colorful. Lovely, gorgeous, and fresh!
Roasted Salsa Verde: Go green by using tomatillos to make a blended salsa. This tomato cousin is slightly tart, but has a brighter taste than your typical garden variety
Five-Ingredient Mango Salsa: Whip up a fruit-based salsa fast with this easy recipe containing only five ingredients!
★~ Coq Au Vin Day
Cock-a-doodle-doo!
Coq Au Vin Day! Coq Au Vin is French for “rooster with wine.” It is a popular dish made with braised chicken that is slowly cooked with red wine, mushrooms, pork fat, and various spices. According to some legends, Coq Au Vin has ties to Julius Caesar or Napoleon, but most historians agree that the dish has more humble roots. Roosters are only butchered when they are quite old and rather inedible. Peasant families most likely invented the Coq Au Vin recipe to avoid wasting the meat.
Coq Au Vin became popular in the United States thanks to Julia Child, who featured the dish in her cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It also appeared many times on her TV show “The French Chef.” It’s not quite as heavy as red-meat stews so it’s a prefect spring and summer stew.
To celebrate International Coq Au Vin Day, embrace your inner chef and plan a French-inspired dinner party. Or better yet make a reservation at a French restaurant.
Bon Appétit!

♥~ 1790 – The smallest of the United States joined the first 12 states as number 13. Rhode Island, the Ocean State, probably got its name when discoverer Verrazano noted that it looked about the size of the tiny Greek Isle of Rhodes. Rhode Island’s capital city is Providence, and the tiny violet is the state flower. Probably the most famous variety of chicken, the Rhode Island Red, is the state bird.
♥~ 1848 –Wisconsin, became the 30th state to enter the Union (Wisconsin, is thought to be the Chippewa Indian word for “grassy place”.) The wood violet is the state flower, the robin is the state bird and Madison is the capital city. Wisconsin’s nickname is the Badger State.
♥~ 1942 – Bing Crosby recorded the Irving Berlin song ‘White Christmas‘ with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra and the Ken Darby Singers in just 18 minutes. ♥~ 1999 – Hikers found a skeleton in a minivan at the bottom of a canyon near Malibu, California. It turned out to be the remains of Iron Butterfly bassist Philip ‘Taylor’ Kramer who had been missing since Feb 1995.
♥~ 2010 – The Philadelphia Phillies’ Roy Halladay threw the 20th perfect game in major-league history in a 1-0 win over the Florida Marlins. It was the second perfect game in the majors in 2010 — Dallas Braden achieved the feat for Oakland against Tampa Bay on May 9 — the first recorded time in which two perfect games were thrown in the same season.

The picture at the top of the post is of Cole (my teen) fence walking with his day campers keeping a watchful eye. Cole bought a canvas pair of shoes on Zappos for park wear this summer. I suggested that I didn’t think these shoes would hold up very well in the park environment. But doncha know when you’re 19 you pretty much know everything…so the shoes were ordered. The shoes have arrived. They are sharp looking and I’m told comfortable. But about as practical as a pair of high heels would be. Why am I sharing this? Just to have it on record, because sure as shooting when the shoes fall apart within the next month if not two weeks, I want, told you so, proof. Nineteen year olds have very short memories. Following my mother was right moment, I will once again point him towards shoes that were meant for mud, gravel, water. . .and of-course the inevitable “OH CRAP” moments. Just one of the joys of a Mother and Son working together.
What are your plans for the weekend?
Odd Loves Company,
♥~
Cole looks like the Pied Piper!! Isn’t it great how being 19 imbues one with super confidence and knowledge?? But I know you’re not going to be toooo hard on him when those beloved shoes fall apart, right?! I mean, if I’d been smart enough at his age NOT to fall into the high-heel trap, I wouldn’t be paying for it now with bunions!!
Happy weekend to you both — salsa sounds great, but Coq Au Vin? Not so much!!
Ok. Fine. Sure ,I’ve made an impractical shoe choice or 100 throughout my adult life but that doesn’t me I’m not yelling I told you so loudly and doing a happy dance.
I finally got rid of the dreaded planters fasciitis and now I am very careful about what I put on my feet. I imagine bunions make you feel much the same way. But back in the days I had this gorgeous pair of channel high heel pumps….sigh.
Morno on the late side. I had a breakfast meeting this morno.
Nobody is smarter then a 19 year old. I remember the age well with my kids. I’m sure I was still humble at that age. But my sister was impossible
Salsa anyday but I still have not had Coq Au Vin. Maybe next year. You’re from Chicago, you understand.
Late afternoon golf followed by dinner with friends. I’m not sure what the weekend will bring other then a nap.
Have a good one.
Uhm Mike maybe we should get your sister’s opinion?
I do understand and there is always next year!
El Morno early or late always glad to hear from humble you! 😀
When I hear salsa, I think spicy. I’ll keep my ketchup.
And you know I have not tasted Coq Au Vin! Interesting though.
Again, good balance! How’s your health insurance look? Pups are certainly interested in Cole’s walk in the park!
Hats off to you & crew for what it takes to run your line of work, & to think of your day camp/boarders fun ahead of the backbreaking work to make that happen!
Count me in as on your side with the soon-to-be history shoes saga.
Ha. Well, maybe you could learn to Salsa! Cha Cha Cha.
Do you know the kid has never broken a bone – not for lack of trying, tho. I attribute it to lots of milk.
We hope set up a grooming room this summer that includes a tub. But all the other plumbing issues need to be addressed first. Camp has to be FUN.
Good side to be on they already look a bit worst for wear. I’ve suggested taking another look at Birkenstock. He loves his sandals.
