Heads or tails? Rumor has it that Julius Caesar invented the coin flip as a method for making decisions. Of course, he always called “heads,” because his own head was on the Roman coin. Caesar’s coin flip settled legal cases, property disputes, and marriage matters. Imagine what life would be like if our fate was sealed by the flip of a coin. “Heads, you go free, tails, you get life in prison.” Ahh, can we go best two outta three here?

♥~1938 –The first issue of Action Comics was published. In its pages was the world’s first super hero, Superman. Jerry Siegel had a dream about the baby, Moses, who was abandoned by his parents in order that his life be saved. This dream prompted Siegel’s creation of the ‘Man of Steel’. Artist Joe Shuster made the comic book hero come alive. The first story, in this first issue, took place on the planet, Krypton, where baby Kal-El was born. The infant was shot to Earth in a rocket just before Krypton exploded.

♥~ 1957 – The first American to break the four-minute mile was Don Bowden, who was timed at 3 minutes, 58.7 seconds.

♥ ~ 1967 – The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was released. One of the first critically-acclaimed rock albums, Sgt. Pepper’s became the number one album in the world and was at the top of the U.S. album list for 15 weeks.

♥ ~ 1980 – CNN — the Cable News Network — made its debut at 5pm as TV’s first all-news channel. Owner Ted Turner told to a crowd of dignitaries and reporters that the channel was not signing off until the end of the world. He said, “To act upon one’s convictions while others wait; to create a positive force in a world where cynics abound; to provide information to people when it wasn’t available before; to offer those who want it a choice … I dedicate the news channel for America, the Cable News Network.”

♥~ 1991 – Students in Almelo, Netherlands, completed the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle: 204,484 pieces. They finished the 1,036-square-foot puzzle in eight days.

♥ ~ 1995 – The U.S. Postal Service issued a 32 cent stamp honoring the late Marilyn Monroe.

♥~ 1926 – Marilyn Monroe  poses over the updraft of New York subway grating (above) while in character for the filming of “The Seven Year Itch” in Manhattan on Sept. 15, 1954. The former Norma Jean Baker modeled and starred in 28 movies grossing $200 million, becoming one of the world’s most adored sex symbols. She died alone by suicide, at age 36 in her Hollywood bungalow on Aug. 5, 1962.

★~ Coin Toss Gallimaufry:

♥~ George H. W. Bush was the first President to perform the Super Bowl coin toss in person. On February 3, 2002, former President Bush went onto the field of the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans to conduct the coin toss for Super Bowl XXXVI. It was the first time Super Bowl Sunday occurred in February as the NFL had rescheduled a week of games after the September 11 attacks. Former President Bush was accompanied by Dallas Cowboys quarterback alum, Roger Staubach.

♥~ A Coin Toss Named Portland Oregon:  The two New England natives who founded Portland—called The Clearing at the time—both vied for the bragging rights of naming the 640-acre locale after their respective hometowns. Pioneers Asa Lovejoy (of Boston) and Francis Pettygrove (hailing from Portland, Maine) split the site’s land claim, and settled the decision on a coin toss. Pettygrove won the best two-out-of-three coin toss in the parlor of the Francis Ermatinger House in Oregon City and the rest is history. Portland was incorporated in 1849, and the copper one-cent piece, minted in 1835 and now dubbed the Portland Penny, is on display at the Oregon Historical Society Museum.

♥ A Coin Toss Decided the First Flight: Wilbur Wright won the chance to make history when he won a coin toss against brother Orville in their camp at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, in 1903. Wilbur bested his brother in the coin toss for the first crack at flying on December 14, but in a twist of fate, Wilbur stalled the flyer in his first attempt, diving the flyer into the sand. Three days later, after repairs, Orville was the first to get the contraption airborne at 10:30 on December 17, 1903. Wilbur, who won the coin toss fair and square, was immortalized in a photograph showing him running alongside the plane, very much grounded.

♥~ A Coin toss sealed Richie Valens’ Fate:  The blockbuster Winter Dance Party Tour (headliners: rock trailblazers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson) stopped at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, a day before the music died. Holly chartered a plane for the tour’s next stop in Moorhead, Minnesota, after his tour bus was plagued with mechanical snafus. Richardson, suffering from the flu, convinced Holly band member Waylon Jennings to give up his seat, freeing up one more spot on the flight. Tommy Allsup, a guitarist in Holly’s band, flipped a coin with Valens for the last seat, and lost the spot to the young star. On February 3, 1959, the flight crashed into a cornfield after a one-two punch of piloting mistakes and poor weather conditions on a day Don McLean would remember as The Day the Music Died.

♥~ A Coin Toss Decided Secretariat’s Owner: The real story behind Secretariat starts in 1969, four years before the horse galloped its way to the Triple Crown. Penny Chenery of Meadow Stable and Ogden Phipps of Wheatley Stable flipped a coin for first pick of two foals sired by prominent racehorse Bold Ruler. Phipps won and picked a filly born from Bold Ruler and a mare named Hasty Matelda. That left Chenery with the yet-unborn foal of Bold Ruler and Something Royal—a colt that would be named Secretariat at two years old, win the Triple Crown at three, and have a heart nearly four times the size of a normal horse. Secretariat’s performance at the Belmont Stakes ranks second on a list of the top 100 greatest individual sports performances ever, with only Wilt Chamberlain hitting the century mark surpassing it.

Monday! The start of a new month. I hope you remembered to say Rabbit Rabbit. But if you forgot just say it twice while jumping backwards and your luck should hold – watch where you’re jumping tho.

I’m off and running. We leave home by 6:20am to pick up our day campers and Vickie (our friend and camp helper) arrives shortly thereafter to start the camp day at home. First stop COFFEE. Today is especially exciting because we’re taking off in my Honda that has 4 new tires! We’re usually home with our day campers by about about 9am. A little later, we’ll take a field trip to the Textile Discount Outlet to buy fabric to make our Camp food bags. In the past, I’ve bought the food bags, but the quality has dropped significantly and the price doubled so we’ll make our own. The Textile Outlet is huge, messy, and confusing but the deals are great and the workers are nice in a fabric store type of way. Ok. Honestly. The whole experience is horrifying. Promising myself great neighborhood taco’s, on the way home, is the only thing that helps me persevere and walk through the doors.  Pray for me and I’ll let you know how it goes.
