Celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, Fat Tuesday is a tradition of blowing off steam before the 40 penitent days of Lent. People do their best to make up for the upcoming days of restraint with jam-packed days of plenty.

♥~ The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold. Purple-Justice. Green-Faith, Gold-Power.
♥~ Throw me something, mister!” A phrase spectators yell out to crew member in hopes of catching a throw of necklaces made of plastic bead, coins called doubloons which are stamped with krews logos along with many other kinds of trinkets and goodies.
♥~ Comus is the Oldest Krewe: The Krewe of Comus was founded in 1857 and used to be one of the biggest events of Mardi Gras. It was also dedicated to its tradition of secrecy concerning its membership. In protest of the 1992 anti-discrimination ordinance, Comus stopped parading rather than provide a public list of its members. ♥~ The krewe still holds its annual ball. There is a “Coconut Bill” to Protect Zulu: Used to be, Zulu riders threw coconuts, and for many generations, that was just fine. Then America began its love-affair with personal injury lawsuits, and people started going to court to claim all manner of damage from coconut impacts. In 1987, the Krewe of Zulu couldn’t get insurance coverage unless it stopped passing out coconuts. The next year, however, the Louisiana Legislature and Governor Edwards gave us SB188, AKA the “Coconut Bill,” which excludes the coconut from personal injury as long as the coconuts are handed, rather than tossed out.

EL Morno to you. This is fun to read over my “cuppa” coffee or is that redundant…would I just say my cuppa.
Funny, I don’t give up anything for Lent but I do try to slow down during the weeks between Lent and Easter. Add a little more reflection to my life. Odd, perhaps but I go to Church every Sunday-attending Church gives me some quiet time with God and a way to get over the past week and move into the coming week with renewed spirit.
Mardi Gras! I still have my bead from when I went in 1969.
