Musing about Lemonade and Lemonade Stands

August 20, 2011: Lemonade Day
Food of the Day for a Year Goal
Day: #45

Saturday was Lemonade Day. We make the best homemade lemonade ever. Joe found the recipe in the newspaper, and he would make it with Cole all summer long. It never lasted long because it was so refreshing and delicious. Cole has carried on the homemade lemonade tradition.

It’s messy to make — have you ever know a kid or a man to pour sugar over the sink like our moms taught us too? My part of the tradition is to help clean up and endure a sticky floor for most of the summer.

Lemonade stands are the best. I always stop to buy a glass from young entrepreneurs. I was incensed to read that some cities were cracking down on kid-run lemonade stands for health code reasons. Have you ever heard of anyone dying or even getting sick from a glass of lemonade bought at a lemonade stand? Give me strength!

My favorite lemonade stand story proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that while lemonade stands might not pass city health regulations, a glass isn’t going to kill you. I have told my lemonade story many times, and you may have heard it before, but I think it deserves to be one of those stories that live on to bore people.

One afternoon, while driving along, I spotted a lemonade stand. It had a colorful 50 cent sign and a blond-haired kid about seven was selling lemonade behind a card table. He greeted me with a big smile, and we visited for a little bit before he carefully poured me a glass of lemonade. I handed him a dollar, declined the change, and started to walk off, when he politely called to me, “May I please have the cup back. It’s the only one I have.” I was, of course, a little surprised but did not let on. I quickly gulped down my lemonade and carefully returned the cup. He smiled and thanked me. I was dying to inquire if I was his first customer or if business had been brisk, but I decided to leave well enough alone. I thought about suggesting that it would be good for business if he found a few more cups, pointing out that if he had two customers at the same time, they were going to have to share. But I didn’t.

Homemade lemonade; lemonade in a carton, in a bottle, in a can; lemonade stands; slightly used lemonade . . . is what lemonade day is all about.

Cheers to Lemonade Day!

  1. Very funny story! I would have loved to have been a fly on the table when two customers did show up to order.
I always try to stop..the kids are so cute and it’s fun to make a kids day for $1.00

  2. That story made me laugh out loud…Ye Gads, I would have gone home and gargled with the stongest mouth wash I had. Just to make me feel better about killing any fatal type of germs. “giggle” (I know……I’m a mental case). 🙄

  4. I can never pass up a kid with a lemonade stand either. I totally agree your not going to catch a thing from drinking a glass of lemonade.
