Celebrating Sponge Cake Day

★~  Today’s Quote: The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.  Carl Rogers

★~ Astrologically Speaking:

Aug 23–Sept 22 is traditionally identified as the sun sign of Virgo, the Virgin. The ruling planet is Mercury.  A few qualities that might describe a typical Virgo:  truthfulness, loyalty, determined, practical, responsible, sensible, logical, analytical, precise, punctual, dedicated, critical and introverted.

★~ Spongecake Day:

What makes sponge cake different from any other cake? It’s made from live sponge harvested from the sea floor. Sea sponge is on the endangered list and can only be harvested for a very short period each year. Divers use large shears to cut the sponge,  and then store it in a metal bowl (metal is the best kind of bowl to use because it keeps the sponge at sea-level temperature). The divers only harvest sponge that is light, bouncy to the touch, and a little foamy around the edges.

When you mix the right sponge with the right ingredients, you have the perfect light and airy dessert for a summer’s day.

I like sponge cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream on it. I like sponge cake with a drizzle of melted chocolate on it. I love sponge cake all by itself with nothing on  it. And I love madeleines and ladyfingers.

Hope you have a chance to soak up a little sponge cake in honor of Sponge Cake Day.

  1. Love El Morno. Catching those gerbils had to be a real challenge! I’m surprised people did not think they were mice or worse.

    Sponge cake is yummy.

  2. Which sign is always late! I’m running but wanted to stop off for a quick sip of El Morno.

The Paradox is a nice El Morno Twist.

  3. Now Katybeth, there are people that will actually think they have to have sponges to make a sponge cake. Boy, are they in for a surprise. I’m sure you will hear about it too.
