★~ National Grape Popsicle Day;

When I read about how the Popsicle was invented, I immediately thought it was a good thing that Mrs. Epperson did not tell her son, “Frankie, “come clean up that soda pop mess, RIGHT NOW!,” or the popsicle might never have been invented. Little Frank Epperson was just eleven years old when he made a soft drink one winter night in 1905 by mixing soda water powder and water, a popular concoction at the time. He left a stirring stick in it and mistakenly left it on the porch overnight. The next morning, Frank found the concoction frozen to the stick, tasted it, and showed it to friends. Eighteen years later, in 1923, he applied for a patent on his “frozen ice on a stick.” He decided to call the novelty the Eppsicle ice pop and began producing the frozen treat in several different flavors. A father by then, his children had begun referring to the Eppsicle as the Popsicle. That name has stuck for nearly a century. Today is called Grape Popsicle Day because that was the first flavor Frank Eppsicle made, but you can celebrate Popsicle Day with your favorite flavor!

★~ Today’s Silly:

A family went to a ranch to go on a horse ride. They all had the chance to pick out their own horses. The dad was the last to pick his out because he helped his kids all get on their horses first. As he kicked his foot into the stirrup, an old ranch hand, leaning against a fencepost, drawled out “I dunno about that ol’ nag, mister. She don’t look so good.”

The dad, sweating and ready to start said “She looks fine to me. Can we just get going?” The ranch hand shook his head and said “It’s your ride, mister.” And motioned to the lead horse to get started. The horses knew the way and started off.

About an hour later, the family returned. The dad was all covered in dust. His face was all scratched up and his shirt had been torn in several places. “This is an outrage!” he yelled. “This horse ran into trees, tore through thorn bushes and ran headlong into low hanging branches. It’s like she’s blind!”

The ranch hand pulled a piece of straw from between his teeth and said “Well, she is.”

“Why didn’t you warn me?” screamed the dad.

“I did” said the ranch hand. “I told you she don’t look so good.”
