IN AN EARLY, AUTUMN SUNSET

★~ Today’s Quote: Autumn mornings: sunshine and crisp air, birds and calmness, year’s end and day’s beginnings.-Terri Guillemets

★~ Autumn

Mabon

Today signals the beginning of Fall in the northern hemisphere (our friends in the southern hemisphere are celebrating the Spring Equinox). On this day there will be an equal amount of light and darkness, and after this day the nights grow longer and we head towards Winter. In many modern Pagan traditions this is the second of three harvest festivals (the first being Lughnasadh, the third being Samhain). Click to read about the celebration of Mabon.

★~ Hobbit Day:

Today is a special day for fans of Tolkien as Frodo and Bilbo are said to both have been born today, by Shire Reckoning of course. Add to that the fact that “The Hobbit” was first published this week in 1937 and you’ve got the makings for a party of special magnificence! Celebrate by having seven meals where cookies, honey cakes and Lembas (Elven waybread)  are served. Enjoy literary discussions and readings, and of-course, Lord of the Rings movie marathons. Indulge your “inner Hobbit” by going barefoot

My Hobbit name is Melilot Brandybuck of Buckland. Click to learn your Hobbit name and Click here to learn some fascinating Hobbit Facts.

★~ Elephant Appreciation Day:

Elephant Family with baby

When people call this beast to mind,
They marvel more and more
At such a little tail behind,
So LARGE a trunk before.
(Hilaire Belloc)

The largest living land animal is the elephant. Their great size, and the thickness and toughness of their skins protect them from every other wild animal. Since they have no enemies to fear except man, elephants are usually peaceful and easy going. They show great affection for one another and spend their lives as members of a family herd, which is made up of several generations of blood relatives, with occasional additions from other herds by mating.

Celebrate elephants by visting them at the zoo, eating peanuts, or even telling an elephant joke or two…they are so good natured they don’t mind.

Q. What is the difference between a dozen eggs and an Elephant?
A. If you don’t know, I’m not going to send you to the store for a dozen eggs.

★~ Ice Cream Cone Day:

Italo Marchiony was a lemon ice pushcart vendor and a problem solver. He invented a paper cone to hold the lemon ice, much like the ones we now use for snow cones. Around 1896, using the paper cone as a mold, he created a new and improved cookie-like cone out of pastry dough. People whined and complained about the change, and threatened to take their lemon ice business to another vendor: The cone was stiff and uncomfortable to hold, the cone bits and pieces could get stuck in your teeth, and for some, there was a deep desire to bite the end of the cone off before they were done eating their lemon ice. Groups formed, and people banded together in dislike of the new cone. But Italo stood firm and asked his customers to just try the cone. Some insisted on finding a pushcart that only used paper cones, but others tried Italo’s cones and loved them. In 1903, he applied for a patent, and the ice cream cone was born. That may not have been exactly how it happened, but it’s close enough.

If you have some stale cones left over from summer, fill them with bird seeds, and hang them in the trees for the birds.

P.S. I am celebrating today with a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks….Don’t tell.

Siberian Husky Welcomes Fall.

#

My Life. FIVE minutes that is all the time it took for everyone to jump up, burrow down, look cute and pretend they had been in their spots for hours and when I returned not so much as tail wag or an ear twitch. Rascal ( my usual bed partner) is wondering WTH. Do you see any room for me? No. So much for Mans Best Friend. When it comes to a spot on the bed it’s every dog and every human for themselves.

Bed partners

Wishing you a beautiful Fall Day!

  1. Picture gives new meaning to the words you snooze you lose. Did you push through or end up on the couch? Fall is a great time of year and finally cooling off. I am working a club tournament this afternoon, and then the family is coming to the club for dinner. They will have ice cream cones on tap.
    Cute Husky.
    Have a good one.

    • Your right–in my case I brushed my teeth and washed my face. I slept in the bed after dog whispering my pups onto the dog beds.
Hope the tournament and after tournament dinner was fun. Ice cream cones on tap? My kind of party!

  2. Good Morno,
Happy Fall. My oldest son loves the Hobbit and my oldest daughter collects everything elephant. Ice cream cones it goes without saying are appreciated by the whole family.
    Cute video of the Husky,
Perhaps you need to assert your leadership skills a little more…As in, move over or get the heck off my bed :-D. Cute picture!

    • Wow, we covered all the bases in your family! My pups and campers usually look at me and roll there eyes. However, my magic wand (fly swatter) and being able to open and close the cookie jar does earn me some respect!

  3. Happy Fall!
My favorite time of the year. We don’t have fall weather yet but it has cooled off a bit.
I have a friend who does volunteer work at an elephant sanctuary and have visited the one she works at a few time, an amazing experience. What surprised me most is how smart they are and how kind they are to one another.
Love the video of the Husky having such fun.
    Enjoy your day

    • Elephants are so cool. And I guess very social and loving. So glad there are sanctuaries around that can care for them.
Fall is my favorite time of the year too.

  4. This is a perfect Fall day — cool, just a hint of a breeze, and not a cloud in the sky! Makes me wish I was outside watching a football game.
Loved the Husky video. Dallas does that often with his toys. Gotta wonder what’s going thru their minds when they do that.
Ice cream cone for today, huh? Hmm, probably ought not to because I had a sundae yesterday.
Did you ever reclaim your bed?? Perhaps I’m lucky that Dallas won’t hop up on mine (though I’d often like him to be curled up next to me!)

    • We call it the zoomies when a silly fit hits. The day was pretty nearly perfect. We took a walk and the kids had gathered for a game of touch football in the park.
Yep, I took control, I went into the kitchen and opened the cookie jar. . .

  5. sure felt like fall approaching today…..80*. nice n/e breeze! we lingered outside this morning with our dog walking friends. no one wanted to go home.
husky knows how to have fun with leaves! what a backyard, too!
an ice cream cone sounds like a nice treat today.
a very fitting bed scene when dogs are around. yeah, doesn’t take too long, does it?! rascal does not look too thrilled. who is the large dog on the right?
    good afternoon!

    • Wow, a cool front in your neck of the the woods! The Great Dane is Eloise. Rascal was not pleased one bit. She insisted I take control and relocate everyone to beds on the floor, while she burrowed under the covers and kept our spot warm and toasty.
