★~ Reminder: Today is the last day of Spring. The longest day of the year — the summer solstice — is almost here. On June 21 2014, at  5:51 am CDT, the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth will reach its point of greatest inclination to the Sun. Time to plan those beach or backyard picnics!

Ice Cream Soda Day,Take Your Dog To Work Day

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream (soda)!  And what better way to celebrate the last day of Spring than with a cold, creamy ice cream soda. El Morno friend Carol it’s your day! Cheers.

Dating all the way back to 1874, ice cream sodas were first invented by Robert Green, who, as legend has it, ran out of cream for the flavored soda he was making. With nothing left but some vanilla ice cream, Green decided to add it to the drink instead – and voila, the ice cream soda was born!

Sounds delicious, right? My Ice Cream Soda of choice is a rootbeer float (Brown Cow), but you might want to float your boat with one of these fine choices…

Dog owners at some businesses won’t have to leave their furry friends at home Friday, when “Take Your Dog to Work Day” marks its 16th anniversary.

Pet Sitters International (PSI) started the event in 1999 to “celebrate the great companions dogs make and encourage their adoptions.”

Fewer than 300 companies participated in the inaugural event, but involvement has grown each year and more than 300,000 visitors explored the event’s website, , this year, said PSI spokeswoman Beth Stultz.

Companies including Procter & Gamble, Amazon and Google are among a few of the big names to welcome pets into the office not just once a year, but every day.

“Having pets in the office boosts morale,” said Julie Franklin, P&G Communications specialist. “It’s a definite stress-reliever. It makes our employees healthier and calmer, which means they’re much more productive.”

A report released by Wellness Natural Pet Food last week shows that bringing your four-legged friend to the office — cats, too — can actually make you healthier and happier.

The report found that 62% of dog and cat owners say they get more exercise because of their pets, and 81% say pets alleviate their stress. Studies funded by the National Institutes of Health also suggest that having a dog can improve cardiovascular health and increase physical activity.

Although only 12% of dog owners can bring their dogs to the office on a regular workday, 48% say they would if they could, according to the Wellness report.

Dr. Al Townshend, staff veterinarian at Wellness Natural Pet Food, said that being able to bring your pet to work benefits both pet and owner.

“It’s an enhancement of the total benefit that pets bring to our lives,” said Townshend.

Elizabeth Bellanti, who works with marketing and social media at Tito’s Handmade Vodka and helped start the dog-culture there 11 years ago, said that having her dog by her desk is “a huge comfort.”

“It’s in our DNA — we’re meant to be together,” said Bellanti.

Townshend emphasized that preparation is necessary to make a pet-filled workplace productive and recommended that dog owners come with a leash, treats and bowls for food and water.

Pet-friendly accommodations don’t hurt, either.

  1. Okay, the TP photo is a hoot! And not a bad idea, really. I wonder if this is common (in Europe). I don’t think it is, as my mom lived in Belgium for years and would surely have mentioned something like this. Have a good walk, Katybeth and an awesome weekend!

    Hugs from Ecuador,
    Kathy

    • Isn’t it funny? And a great idea. I think all stores should offer samples. I don’t want to imagine what your tp is like—we use Charmin ultra soft with Aloe – or is that too much information?

  2. Do you know why I’m now getting “you 404’d” it when trying to view prior year posts? I love your website using it daily for my office and our clients and sometimes need to go back and look at dates that are from a year or two ago. Any way to get around the 404?

Congratulations on Cole’s graduation, I watched the entire video and although I don’t know a single one of you I got choked up. I loved the very last picture, perfect way to bring it to a close.

    • Thank you. I’m not sure what the problem is but I am working to recreate it and fix it. I’m glad you find Odd useful. Stop by anytime, we’ll leave the light on 😀

  3. To me the only float is the root beer float. Will try to enjoy one this weekend.
I’d sure like to take Nik to work. She would be an asset & well received.
As always…..we need some rain. Hope you get your Rascal walk in prior to the next downpour.
    Stay dry!

    • Good. Why Not!
I bet Nik would love to head out with you each day and bask in all that well deserved extra attention.
Blowing rain and cool air in your direction. Funny, I remember that it rained all the time in your neck of the woods during the summer creating sauna like humidity.

  4. Darn it all….. I haven’t thought about a rootbeer float at all and now it won’t leave my mind. Suppose I will have to leave my diet for a day and indulge or I will have that picture “floating” around in my mind until I do…Gee thanks Katybeth!

    • Past time for to indulge yourself with a rootbeer float. You love them, it’s summer, and I will take full thanks for encouraging you!

  5. Darling Doggie Dallas goes to work with me every day — and we both love it! Just one of the many benefits of working from home.

I used to love a root beer float, but I haven’t had one in years. Perhaps this weekend will be a good time to remedy that? Assuming, of course, that I can extend Ice Cream Soda Day a couple of days!
