★~ National Absinthe Day: 

National Absinthe Day has been celebrated since 2007, the year when Lucid Absinthe became the first true absinthe to be approved for distribution in the United States since 1912. Lucid Absinthe Supérieure is distilled from grande wormwood, green anise, sweet fennel and other European herbs. It is naturally green in color. Check out ‘Did You Know’ (below) for more information on how to celebrate Absinthe Day.

★~ Cheese Doodle Day: 

Cheese Doodles have long been America’s favorite bright orange snack. Morrie Yohai invented the Cheese Doodle in the 1940s. After serving as a Marine in World War II, he returned to his home in the Bronx and took over the family business—a snack food company called Old London Foods.

During the 1960s, Wise Foods, Inc. acquired the company, and Cheese Doodles became part of the potato chip division. Today, Cheese Doodles are one of Wise’s strongest brands. The company produces over 15 million pounds of the stuff each year! That’s enough to fill 36 Olympic-sized swimming pools!  And let us not forget the couple, I introduced you to last Cheese Doodle Day,  who found a Cheetos snack in a shape they described as resembling Jesus Christ nicknamed it “Cheesus” and garnered national media attention. They did not sell the “Cheesus” on e-bay.

★~ Today in History:

♥~1891- Labour Day, also known as Eight Hours Day in Tasmania and May Day in the Northern Territory, commemorates the granting of the eight-hour working day for Australians. It also recognizes workers’ contributions towards the nation’s economy. It is an annual public holiday and its date varies across the states and territories.

♥~ 1872 – George Westinghouse of “You can be sure if it’s Westinghouse” fame patented the air brake . They were, and remain, especially important to trains, big trucks, buses and amusement park rides.

♥~ 1953 – A grand jury in Elizabeth, New Jersey, rejected efforts to ban the The Moon is Blue for obscenity. The film was condemned by the Catholic Church (it objected to the inclusion of the words ‘virgin’, ‘seduce’, ‘mistress’ and ‘pregnant’). The movie, with its dialogue intact, was a big hit at the box office.

♥~ 1963 – Wham-O patents the Hula Hoop

♥~1977- The Illinois General Assembly declared the first Monday in March to be Pulaski Day in 1977 to honor General Casimir Pulaski the Revolutionary War hero who reportedly saved General George Washington’s life in 1777. The holiday also seeks to honor the heritage of Polish-Americans–as Chicago has the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw.

♥~ 1982 –  Actor and singer John Belushi died from an overdose of cocaine and heroin. Belushi was one of the original cast members on US TV’s Saturday Night Live, played Joliet ‘Jake’ Blues in The Blues Brothers and also appeared in the film Animal House. His tombstone reads “I may be gone, but rock n roll lives on.”

★~ Did You Know:

♥~ Absinthe has rich history.  Gaining popularity in France during the 1800’s among artists and writers because it was pegged as particularly bohemian, it made its way to the U.S. as a famed favorite during Prohibition.

A chemical compound, thujone, could be traced in scant amounts to absinthe, and was immediately blamed as an addictive psychoactive drug with harmful effects. It was banned in the U.S. and Europe in 1915, but that didn’t stop people from quaffing “la fée verte,” or its nickname, “the green fairy.”

But it turns out that the harmful effects were greatly exaggerated, and absinthe received a welcoming revival in the 1990s after the bans were removed. Now, nearly 200 brands are produced here and across Europe.

Join the ranks of Ernest Hemingway, Oscar Wilde and Vincent van Gogh by raising a glass to this controversially sweet beverage – just don’t let it go to your head.

♥~ The Traditional Way to Serve Absinthe:

(For the sake of this recipe we are assuming you do not have a absinthe fountain but if you do by all means use it to prepare your cocktail)

Pour 1¼ to 1½ oz. of Lucid into a chalice glass. Rest the slotted spoon across the rim of the glass and place the sugar cube atop the spoon.*
Slowly drip ice-cold water over the sugar cube, dissolving it into the absinthe. The cold water causes Lucid to louche (“loosh”), a process in which the distilled herbal essences “blossom” into an opalescent cloud, the essence and flavors come to life and perfume the air.
The louching is done when the water and Lucid have become completely cloudy and opaque. Sip and enjoy.
*Sugar cube is optional. Water may be added directly to absinthe.

♥~ Death in The Afternoon:  Ernest Hemingway was a famously prodigious drinker; what’s less well-known is his bartending skill. Hemingway himself claimed to have invented this combination of absinthe and Champagne.

♥~ Sazerac: this New Orleans classic uses only enough absinthe to coat the inside of the glass, but that tiny amount completely changes this combo of rye whiskey, sugar and bitters.

Fee Fi Fo Fum…it smells like snow out there…The National Weather Service has informed us another arctic blast is heading our way. We are suppose to get hit with  3-10 inches of snow between Tuesday and Wednesday. Doesn’t that seem like a large snow margin? There is a big difference between 3 inches of snow and 10 inches of snow. . .

Have you ever had an Absinthe cocktail? I have not but I wouldn’t mind trying a taste. The color is pretty.
