★~ National Memo Day:
To: All Employees
Subject: Casual Fridays:
Week 1 – Memo No. 1
Effective this week, the company is adopting Fridays as Casual Day. Employees are free to dress in the casual attire of their choice.
Week 3 – Memo No. 2
Spandex and leather micro-miniskirts are not appropriate attire for Casual Day. Neither are string ties, rodeo belt buckles or moccasins.
Week 6 – Memo No. 3
Casual Day refers to dress only, not attitude. When planning Friday’s wardrobe, remember image is a key to our success.
Week 8 – Memo No. 4
A seminar on how to dress for Casual Day will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the cafeteria. A fashion show will follow. Attendance is mandatory.
Week 9 – Memo No. 5
As an outgrowth of Friday’s seminar, a 14-member Casual Day Task Force has been appointed to prepare guidelines for proper casual-day dress.
Week 14 – Memo No. 6
The Casual Day Task Force has now completed a 30-page manual entitled “Relaxing Dress Without Relaxing Company Standards.” A copy has been distributed to every employee. Please review the chapter “You Are What You Wear” and consult the “home casual” versus “business casual” checklist before leaving for work each Friday. If you have doubts about the appropriateness of an item of clothing, contact your CDTF representative before 7 a.m. on Friday.
Week 18 – Memo No. 7
Our Employee Assistant Plan (EAP) has now been expanded to provide support for psychological counseling for employees who may be having difficulty adjusting to Casual Day.
Week 20 – Memo No. 8
Due to budget cuts in the HR Department we are no longer able to effectively support or manage Casual Day. Casual Day will be discontinued, effective immediately.
Does anyone memo anymore? Or is it all about Memes these days.
★~ Waitress and Waiters Appreciation Day:
The only way to properly celebrate this day is to go out for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I always appreciate the restaurant server that does not refill my ice tea immediately after I have determined it has just the right amount of sugar; Cole appreciates it when the waiter brings a side of napkins when he orders a rack of ribs; and we both appreciate it when they don’t assume Pepsi will do when we ordered Cokes. Eating out and adding a little extra to the tip is a nice way to say “thank you” to the person filling your bread basket for the fourth time. Interesting opinion on tipping the wait staff: Tipping puts waiters at the mercy of greedy bullies
★~ National Strawberries and Cream Day:
The simple combination of fresh sliced strawberries and homemade whipped cream has been a popular dish for centuries. In fact, in medieval England it was customary for newlyweds to enjoy strawberries and soured cream for their wedding breakfast.
Strawberry Cream Torte
Strawberry Cream Pie
Strawberry Cream Shortcake
Strawberry Creamy-Dreamy Cake
★~ Today in History:
♥~ 1819 – The first bicycles in the United States were called swift walkers and were seen for the first time on the streets of New York City.
♥~ 1932 – Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic solo, from Newfoundland to Ireland.
♥~ 1945 – Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart were married. Legend has it that the couple fell in love in 1943 during making of the film, To Have and Have Not. Theirs would become one of Hollywood’s most enduring marriages.
♥~ 1990- In a classic final episode of the Newhart TV series, Bob Newhart woke up in bed with Suzanne Pleshette, his wife on a previous series, The Bob Newhart Show. He had been dreaming since 1978.
♥~ 1994 – Tim McGraw’s Not a Moment Too Soon was the #1 album in the U.S.
♥~ 1998 – Frank and Shirley Capaci of Streamwood, Illinois announced they were the holders of a winning Powerball ticket worth $195 million (they actally got $104.3 million because they chose a lump-sum payment). Frank said, “First thing I’m gonna do is buy a Harley-Davidson. I ain’t gonna buy nothin’ else but a Harley-Davidson.”
♥~ 2006 – 62,000 runners participated in the annual Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco. Gilbert Okari (27) of Kenya won in 34 minutes and 20 seconds. The women’s winner was Ukrainian Tetyana Hladyr won in 39:09. S.F. Mayor Gavin Newsom (38) finished the 7.46 miles in 59:04.

♥~ 1916 – Harold Robbins (Francis Kane) writer: One of the best-selling novelists of all time, perhaps best known for his novel The Carpetbaggers (1961), which is loosely based on the life of eccentric businessman Howard Hughes.
♥~ 1917 – Raymond (William Stacy) Burr actor: Perry Mason, Ironside, Rear Window, A Place in the Sun, The Defense Never Rests, Godzilla; died Sep 12, 1993
♥~ 1944 – Janet Dailey novelist: At the age of 30, Dailey and her husband sold their construction company and set off to see America in a trailer. While on the road, Dailey read romance novels and soon remarked to her husband that she thought she could write one herself and that’s just what she did. Six months later, her first book became a Harlequin romance. To her great surprise, No Quarter Asked (1976) sold more than one million copies.

♥~ Good To Know: We missed Metrology (the study of measurement) Day yesterday, but better late than never!
♥~ Your body only contains about 5.5 liters of blood, but your heart cycles over 7500 liters of blood (around 2000 U.S. gallons) through it each day. That’s enough to fill almost 48 oil barrels.
♥~ Humans shed around 500 million skin cells a day, adding up to 0.003 oz of skin each hour, 0.072 oz per day, and almost 26.3 oz of cells every year. It takes four to five large bananas to comprise the same weight.
♥~ The mucous membranes in your head produce between 1 and 1.5 liters of mucus a day. Thankfully, most of that drains directly down the back of your throat, unnoticed. When you’re sick, you generally don’t produce more of it, but it’s more noticeable because its consistency has changed.
♥~ Each day, the average adult—male or female—speaks about 16,000 words.
♥~ You probably lose around 100 hairs from your head every day, which can sound like a lot, but the average blonde has 150,000 hairs on their head. Brunettes, with brown or black hair, range around 100,000, and redheads, while last, still have over 80,000 hairs covering the scalp.
♥~ Each hair stays on your scalp for between 2 and 6 years, and is growing for all but approximately the last 3 months of its “lifespan.”
♥~ The average American eats around 2000 pounds (900 kg) of food per year (or almost 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg) of food per day). The 1968 VW Beetle weighed in similarly.
♥~ Helping to digest that food are between 600 and 5000 distinct species of bacteria living in the healthy human gut. All of those species add up to over 100 trillion bacterial cells in the body, outnumbering “human” cells 10-to-1. Don’t worry, you’re not completely bacteria. Those single-celled organisms generally weigh less than 5 pounds (2.3 kg).
♥~ The human skeleton makes up about 18 percent of our weight (around 32 pounds, or 15 kg in a 180 pound/81 kg person), and can support five times as much pressure as a steel bar with the same dimensions. Frequently-used bones (such as the femur in a runner, or the arm bones in a tennis player) can support up to 8 times as much pressure as a steel bar with the same dimensions.
♥~ Want to make those bones stronger? Brisk walking can significantly strengthen the lower limbs for those whose current activity level falls around the U.S. average—less than 6000 steps taken every day. While no industrialized country surpasses the ideal average of 10,000 steps per day, Australians come closest, with a 9965-step average in the sample group.
♥~ Working out works our sweat glands out, too! The human body sweats an average of 1.5 L/hour during physical exertion, but can sweat up to 3 L/hour if extremely taxed or in high temperatures at the same time. A sedentary person in a comfortable environment isn’t sweat-free, though—every day still brings about 1 L of sweat, with more than half a pint of it coming from the feet alone!
♥~ Humans blink around 10 to 15 times a minute, with each blink lasting around 100 milliseconds. This adds up to almost 16 minutes of the day spent blinking, assuming one sleeps 8 hours a night.

OKLAHOMA! How to help Tornado Victims. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. (Thank you El Morno friend Julianne for the link)
Stormy and Rainy in my neighborhood. Lots of thunder and lightening. I love a good storm, my pups not so much so. Off to work some problems and kill a few rats. Hope you have a terrific Tuesday!
Odd Loves Company!
Morno,
I have good friends in Oklahoma that were hit pretty hard. I finally talked them yesterday. Fortunately, they have lots of support, but it is devastating. Might try to go and help with the clean up. Adding insult to injury they just finished a huge renovation project.
Prefer my strawberries straight up, but I do like strawberry shortcake.
Good to know was interesting and I’m sure glad we did not miss Metrology Day completely.
Have a good one
So sorry about your friends Mike! What an awful thing to have happen. I hope no one was hurt. Let us know if we can help or if they need anything specific!
It was a close call on Metrology day, but we fit it in! It’s already on the calendar for next year!
Good Morno,
Oh, Mike ^ I’m so sorry about your friends. What an awful, awful thing to have happen. If I can contribute to them directly or help please let me know! I know it’s to early, but I could sure send a box of basic household items.
The measurements were interesting. I haven’t seen a memo in years. It’s all e-mail now. Love strawberries and cream!
Appreciating today, rain and all!
What a nice offer Geri. I think memos are a thing of the past, who needs them with e-mail, texting, and other forms of instant communication!
We have rains and storms and I agree they aren’t so bad!
Afternoon!
Adding my thoughts and prayers to all those in Oklahoma. And counting my own blessings. Lordy, what an awful thing to have to go through. Just terrible.
I love strawberry shortcake and strawberries with cream and powdered sugar. Funny memo. I think the places I worked were always casual. I couldn’t possible eat 2000 pounds of food per year, but the facts were interesting.
Hope you are having a good day!
It is terrible. One of our favorite ways to eat strawberries is with cream and powdered sugar!
Just don’t think about the 2000 pounds of food…I am sure you’ve eaten much, much less!
I’m going to a dog show this weekend in Amarillo TX. They’ve asked all of us to please donate items they can use for dogs and someone from the club will get them all to O.K. What a sad bad thing those people have been through.
MJ
That is a nice way to help! I’ve seen some animals stories titled “Happy ending”, but I’m not reading them, of-course. Happy can be a matter of opinion and won’t come before they share all the angst!
Interesting facts on Metrology Day. Loved the Memo, but could readily guess where it was going!
Bad storms here last night. Power was out from 11:30 p.m. to 1:40 this afternoon. Hard playing catch up when you have to pick up downed limbs and have no electricity! But no way would I complain when we had it so much easier than those poor souls in OK.
Ouch. That is a long time without power. I know! Storms in our neck of the woods, but nothing to serious. Hope the clean up wasn’t too bad!
