★~ World Environment Day:
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know about the environmental crisis we all face. And actually, if you have been living under a rock, then good for you. You have reduce your carbon footprint, and we applaud you. But for the rest of us above ground, gas guzzling, energy wasting earth dwellers, it’s time to step it up. That’s why the United Nations started World Environment Day to increase awareness and bring political and public action to solving environmental problems. So today we look for way’s to do our part so we aren’t all living under rocks some day.
★~ National Running Day:
National Running Day, held annually on the first Wednesday in June, is a day when runners everywhere declare their passion for running. Wherever we are and whomever we’re with, we run—fast or slow, alone or with others, all over town or just around the block. It is a coast-to-coast celebration of a sport and activity that’s simple, inexpensive, and fun. It’s the perfect way for longtime runners to reaffirm their love of running and for beginners to kick off a lifetime and life-changing commitment.
★~ Gingerbread Day:
You might not be ready to think about gingerbread with the holiday season so far in the future, but maybe today we could consider making it a year round treat. The gingerbread recipe has been running around since 992, when an Armenian monk brought the recipe to Europe and spent years teaching it to other monks and clergymen. Gingerbread can be served up as soft cake or a snappy cookie’ or in the form of a house or little man. Or as a really big man, as was the case of the largest gingerbread man ever made, at 1308 pounds and 20 feet tall. Got milk?

When the song hit, Paxton sent a dozen groups on the road, all called The Hollywood Argyles.

★~ Good to Know:
♥~ Music can boost your running performance by up to 15%. But only if you’re a particular kind of runner. If you tend to focus inward while running, music probably won’t help you much… but if you look for stimulus from your environment, pump the tunes to get over the finish line more quickly!
♥~ Even if you’re a super-slow jogger, you’ll burn at least 10 calories per minute of running. That means you’ll run off half a block of Lindt Dark Chocolate in less than 23 min!
♥~ The record for most marathons run on consecutive days is 365! Belgian runner Stefaan Engels, knows as the “Marathon Man” set the record in 2011, aged 49!
♥~ Athletes dressed in red are more likely to win events than athletes wearing any other color.
♥~ The fastest mile (approx. 1.6km) ever run was by Morrocan, Hitcham El Guerrouj, in 3:43:13 in 1999.
♥~The fastest mile for a woman was set by Russia’s Svetlana Masterkova, her time was 4:12.56 – the run was in 1996 and hasn’t been seriously challenged since!
♥~ The oldest person to complete a marathon was born in 1911, making him 100 years old at the time. He was an Indian man named Fauja Singh. AND guess what? Fauja didn’t even start running until he was 89 years of age. It’s never too late!
♥~ Women were excluded from the Boston Marathon until 1972. But that didn’t stop them. In 1966, Roberta Gibbs, hid behind a bush and jumped out to complete the run and finished “unofficially” in 3:21:25! She was the first woman to complete the course.
♥~ Over 1 billion pairs of running shoes are sold world-wide each year.
♥~ 12 of the world’s top-20 distance runners are members of the Kalenjin tribe of northwest Kenya.
♥~ Runners who played ball sports (i.e. soccer or footy) as kids had nearly 50 percent fewer stress fractures than runners who didn’t. Stanford University researchers found that runners who played ball sports had, “greater and more symmetrically distributed bone mass.” (Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine)
♥~ Physically active people have a 60 percent lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease than coach potatoes (The Lancet Neurology – Sweden)
♥~ In the feet, 26 bones, 33 joints, 112 ligaments, and a network of nerves, tendons, and blood vessels have to work together when we run!
♥~ Strides are extremely consistent among professional runners, usually between 185-200 steps per minute!
♥~ In a recent study, when asked what food they couldn’t live without, most runners named bananas as their most adored foodie fix!
♥~ El Morno friend Irene (a runner) is healing from surgery on her achilles tendon. Lets all wish her a speedy recovery! Go! Irene! Go!

I thought this was very cool: Stefan Kordiuk captured the changing of the seasons at the same location over a year and a half in this gorgeous time-lapse clip

Well, as you can plainly see, I am running behind! My summer routine is betwixt and between! Hope everyone has a wonderful Wednesday (It is Wednesday, right?)
Odd Loves Company!

Morno,
I am more of a walker than a runner, but my daughter runs most days, all weather. Will share some of your running facts with her. . .Gingerbread cookies aren’t bad. Hope Irene has a quick recovery. That sounds like painful surgery.
Neat video.
Have a good one.
Well I tell myself, no matter how slow I go, I’m lapping everyone on the couch. Good for your daughter! Wasn’t the video cool? I loved it.
I’ve been running all morno. Trying to make sure we have everything for our trip and passing kids off at playdates. I lived on gingerbread snap cookies when I was pregnant. They settled my stomach.
How Irene heals quick and has lots of good books to read while she recovers.
And she is off again…Enjoy your day!
RUN! Liz! RUN! See Liz RUN!!

If nothing else convinces people to get off the sofa, this fact should: “Physically active people have a 60 percent lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease than coach potatoes.” Amazing!
I tend to prefer fast walking to slow running, but that’s because the Sheltie is usually tethered to me by his leash. When I try to run with him, he jumps in the air, barks, and tries to bite at the leash (whatever that accomplishes!). We don’t get very far, obviously!
Best wishes to Irene for a quick recovery.
I fast walk with Rascal too..well fast is all relative isn’t it?? I try to out pace her for a few blocks and she thinks it’s a game. DD seems to really make a game out of it!!
national running day…..wouldn’t you know it! thanks, all, for the good wishes. i really appreciate it. personal training/running wasn’t the culprit. i was asked to help & chased down a boy who was fleeing. no warm up before a full out sprint. i’d like to say it was an *explosive* movement !
i could go for a gingerbread cookie while listening to the stones.
good day!
Sheesh…what a way to nail yourself. I hope someone gave the kiddo a hard kick in the shin. Explosive for sure!
Well, maybe add gingerbread snaps to the grocery list (when someone else shops for you, I hope) and munch during your recovery!
I am a walker not a runner. I admire runners. Just don’t have it in me. Loved the time lapse video!!
I like the idea of running…and the clothes are kind of fun…but alas I am a walker. Really like the app Runkeeper (thanks) I have been walking 1 mile twice a day but on I’ve hit that “I don’t want to wall.” I let Rascal drag me on the short walk about 1/2 mile for the last few days, but it been so hard…Good thing I’m addicted to check marks and those new “records” Runkeeper keeps saying I’m breaking–1/2 mile–Record for the slowest, shortest walk!Today I was back up again….so I guess you just have to work through it ugh.
Thanks for the Stones shout out. I’m still enjoying the post concert buzz. I used to run, now I just walk. Unless George sees a rabbit on our walk – then off we go, though I will confess I’ve had to just give up and drop his leash a time or two. He’s a strong dog.
I’m going to check out Runkeeper – I love to track my walks.
Yes, he really is! All the hair is deceiving. Runkeeper is a great app ^^Beth Ann introduced me to it….and FREE if you don’t want all the bells and whistles. It’s also easy to use which is nice.
Go Irene go! I used to be a runner. Even ran 5 or so marathons. Sort of like childbirth I hear…you forget the pain and do it again. Then I broke something. All downhill fro there. Sad.
Well, you show Katie, walk, and camp out in your backyard! play in the community band and work full time while tackling trucking legislation. I would say you run metaphorically! Not the same, but will you give it close?
Love the time lapse video of the changing seasons..so pretty , so calming..love all the seasons.. 😀
Isn’t it pretty. . . I guess he found a way to set up his camera in exactly the same place each time he visited.
I never cared for Gingerbread but then a friend in Houston talked me right in to liking it! Kind of what happened to me with V8! LOL
I too hope Irene heals quickly. What she didn’t say, was she was injured chasing down a little kid who had decided to run away off the school grounds.
