★~  Today’s Quote:  “I don’t worry too much about pointing fingers at the past. I operate on the theory that every saint has a past, every sinner has a future.” Warren Buffett

★~ Frankenstein Day:

“It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. … It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the pains, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs.”

We celebrated Frankenstein day in honor of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley birthday (1797), who wrote the book Frankenstein (1818) which is considered the first science fiction novel ever written.

A Few Frankenstein facts:

* Author Mary Shelley called her Frankenstein creation “Adam.”

* Dr. Frankenstein’s character was based on a real doctor who experimented with reanimating corpses to achieve immortality.

* Frankenstein’s monster has appeared on a U.S. postage stamp both in 1997 and 2002!

★~ Slinky Day:

Lets have an El Morno Slink along!!

What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs
and makes a slinkity sound?
A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing!

Everyone knows it’s Slinky.
It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky,
It’s fun, it’s a wonderful toy.
It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky, it’s fun,

It’s a wonderful toy.
It’s fun for a girl or a boy.

The Slinky first appeared in the 1940s, created by American naval engineer Richard James. Apparently James invented the classic plaything by accident. He was working on a set of metal springs for shipboard instruments. Suddenly, a section of spring fell off his laboratory shelf and stepped down several stacks of books, papers and counter before landing in a neat upright stack, a light bulb went on, and a legend was born.

It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky,
It’s fun, it’s a wonderful toy.

★~ National Toasted Marshmallow Day:

Some of us toast our marshmallows by allowing the flame of the fire to gently kiss the marshmallow, turning it the perfect shade of brown, while others with less discriminating palates love the charred-beyond-recognition version. Still others like to shove as many marshmallows as they can into their mouth all at once toasted or not.

Marshmallows are made from the mallow plant, which is found in marshes. Hence, the name “marshmallow.” They were enjoyed by ancient Egyptian royalty as early as 2000 B.C. and introduced to the United States in the early 1900s. The Girl Scouts were not just content to roast marshmallows; they said, “Give us MORE”—and in 1927, the Girl Scout handbook introduced the first recipe for s’mores. Which only goes to prove that if you give a Girl Scout a marshmallow, she is going to want s’mores.

How do El Mornoer’s like their marshmallows:

My Sweet Mother:  Black on the outside and gooey on the inside.

Debbie –   lightly browned on the outside, gooey on the inside.

Mike –  gentle toasted to a light brown-not to gooey on the inside.

Carol – golden brown on the outside, gooey inside.

★~ Today in History:

Prince

(I used the Brady bunch picture last year….)

♥~ 1974 – The Brady Bunch, a typical 1970s scrubbed-face American family sitcom which first aired on TV Sept. 26, 1969, came to an end on this day. This original series starred Robert Reed as the architect-widower with three sons (played by Barry Williams as Greg, Christopher Knight as Peter and Mike Lookinland as Bobby), who married a widow (Florence Henderson). The new Mrs. Brady had three daughters (played by Maureen McCormick as Marcia, Eve Plumb as Jan and Susan Olsen as Cindy). Add a nutsy housekeeper, Alice (Ann B. Davis), a family dog and cat and ABC-TV ended up with one giant TV success viewed weekly by millions of youngsters … and their loving parents. Don’t you miss those Friday night family gatherings in front of the TV?

♥~ 1984 – Prince was pictured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine (issue 429).

♥~ 1997 – Mo Money Mo Problems, by The Notorious B.I.G.featuring Puff Daddy & Mase, hit #1 (for two weeks) on U.S. singles charts. An entire generation fell in love to: “You tell me who flopped who copped the blue drop; Who jewels got robbed who’s mostly Goldie down to the tube sock…” and so much more.

♥~ 2007 – A diamond-encrusted skull by 41-year-old British artistDamien Hirst sold for 100 million dollars (75 million euros) in London. It was a record price for a work sold by a living artist.

The last weekend of summer. Cole goes back to school next Wednesday, but because he is a senior he will show up on Tuesday to meet and greet the first graders and practice for the rose ceremony, a beautiful, Waldorf School tradition that I will be writing a lot more about. It’s a tail wagging weekend, but we plan to escape on Sunday when our trusty friend and camp helper Vickie takes over for the day. Do you have any plans?

  1. Frankenstein the coolest monster of all. Your right about how I like my marshmallows. My daughter roasts them to perfection. My son torch’s them.
The original slinky is a great toy. We use to have one in the office.
Family is in town, lots of golf and maybe a side trip to do a few tourist type things. My sister is the weekend hostess but my brother-in-law and I will keep the b-q going and the beers cold.
    That sign is funny.
    Have a good one.

    • Sounds like a busy weekend. Don’t burn the burgers while you’re worrying about the cold beer. And maybe you should take a watermelon and cut it up too! Yum!

  2. Morno,
The slinky song will now be playing in my head all day. Why do some songs stick like that? Since the kids always toast my marshmallows they are charred beyond recognition and usually include a little ash.
Such a funny sign. Another rather unfortunate name.
    Have a good one.

    • I have no idea, but I found myself singing or humming it all day too. Roasted marshmallows with a little ash for seasoning, nothing beats them.

  3. Prefer the original monster movies, such as Frankenstein, to any remakes. They are still very scary!
I’m with Debbie ^ with toasted marshmallows.
Slinkys were fun! Seems like many toys were discovered by mistake. Aren’t those 60s commercials timeless?
    Hedgehog is a better name.
Nik has an appointment tomorrow. I’ll get the tires rotated, too. Probably a farm jaunt sometime. Gil’s is open 1/2 day Monday so I’ll join in. There will be fill in the schedule stuff as well.
    Good afternoon!

    • I keep a slinky along with click clacks and some colorful disks that slide up and down a pole on the bookshelf by my desk. Something to amuse me while I patiently wait on hold. I was singing the slinky song all day yesterday.
Sounds like you have a fun weekend planned. Hope the heat gives you a break.

  4. The temp on my car read 99 today when I was in Rockford. I had to look twice, but it sure felt like it out there. This rain has cooled it down some and we have had less than a 1/4 inch of rain. The best part is…no semi’s rolling past for the next 3 days…YEA! I do believe I made a difference in preventing a major car crash by reporting people not stopping at a newly planted stop sign. IDOT is IDIOT!! People use to flying down TownHall rd heading to the bypass did not have any warning that there is now a 4 way stop due to the re-routing of traffic due to replacing the overpasses on 3 different roads. I saw today that finally they are putting up signs warning people of this. I called the sheriffs office when I got home from my walk yesterday morning, so maybe it did do some good. I just knew that a semi would be pulling out on Town Hall and a car would meet each other if something wasn’t done. I feel relief now.

    • Good for you Carol! I’m sure your phone call made a difference. Are the roads closed to semi’s or is it because of the three day weekend? It was about 97 in Chicago, yesterday. I haven’t complained to much tho because this summer has been so much cooler than last year. Remember all those 100 plus days? It cooled off a little after the storm but I think it is suppose to be a steamy weekend. I’m looking forward to our escape and field trip tomorrow!

  5. Yum…marshmallows. I haven’t had one in ages, and you got it just right the way I like them!
Back to school already? Shucks, seems like summer just got started. Is the Bug in a covered place where he can work on it this winter?

    • The school has a garage, where it can be worked on until the weather becomes too brutal. Lots of headway was made last week so hopefully he won’t have much to do past November.
