★~ Peppermint Pattie Day:

A Peppermint Pattie is a tasty confection made with a rich, creamy peppermint filling covered in semisweet chocolate. The York Cone Company, which was based in Pennsylvania and originally produced ice cream cones, invented the York Peppermint Pattie in 1940. Unlike the existing chocolate-covered peppermint candies, York’s product was firm and crisp. It soon became the premier candy of its kind.

The Peppermint Pattie also gained notoriety after the debut of Peanuts, Charles M. Schultz’s famous comic strip, in 1966. One of the main characters is “Peppermint Patty.”

★~ Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day: 

Cry over spilled grape juice — because that stain is never coming out — but there is no reason to get yourself all worked up over a glass of milk. The saying “don’t cry over spilled milk” is an age-old proverb that has been around for hundreds of years. The first historical reference to the phrase appears in a document written by British historian James Howell in 1659. The saying most likely comes from European folklore. According to the old tales, fairies were particularly fond of milk and would drink up any spills left behind.

To celebrate Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day, let bygones be bygones. Perhaps, you’ll want to make a new friend!

Perhaps, you can’t make a friend in one day (unless you count Facebook friends, and who doesn’t 🙂 )  but you can be friendly to those you meet along the way and then who knows what will happen.

★~ White T-Shirt Day;

This holiday commemorates the General Motors strike of 1937. As a result, General Motors recognized the United Auto Workers Union. As a symbol of their unity, the autoworkers all wore white shirts or blouses.

White T-Shirt day celebrates the men and women who participated in a strike at General Motors in 1937. “These autoworkers helped the United Auto Workers (UAW) union to become the sole bargaining agent for General Motors autoworkers.” As part of the symbolism of this strike, everyone wears a white shirt or blouse.

♥~ 1808 – Judge Jesse Fell  of Pennsylvania tried a different way of heating his home and became the first American to use anthracite coal in his home fireplace.

♥~ 1861 – President-elect Abraham Lincoln and his wife left Springfield, IL by train for Washington, DC (and their new gigs as president and first lady). About 400 miles into the trip, Mary Lincoln reportedly turned to the new President and said, “Did you lock the back door, Abe?” and “I think I left my makeup bag on the counter…”

♥~ 1905 –  James Blackstone of Seattle set a world record by bowling 299½. On the last roll, one pin broke in half and half of it remained standing. Honest.

♥~ 1942 – The Archie comic book debuted, featuring Riverdale High’s Archie Andrews, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and the rich, conniving Reggie. Archie had debuted two months earlier in Pep comics. Spinoffs included a long-time radio show, two TV cartoon series, and a rock group called The Archies.

♥~ 1950 “Shovel all the coal in, gotta keep it rollin’” is a famous rhyme from the song “Chattanooga Choo Choo.” Glenn Miller received a gold record for “Chattanooga Choo Choo” on a live radio show during the second week of February, 1942.  And on this date in 1950, a record with a similar title, “Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy” by Red Foley, topped the Billboard chart of songs played most often in jukeboxes.

♥~ 1975 – The movie, Shampoo, opened. Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn, Jack Warden, Lee Grant (who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress), Tony Bill, William Castle and Howard Hesseman starred. And, making her film debut a year before Star Wars made her famous: Carrie Fisher.

★~Sweethearts Gallimaufry:

The sweet candy hearts that fill up store aisles and candy dishes in early February got their start around the time of the Civil War. The original candies, called cockles, were made from sugar and flour and contained mottoes or sayings, which were printed on thin paper and rolled up inside the folded, shell-shape candy.

Daniel Chase, the brother of the New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) founder, began printing sayings on NECCO candy in the 1860s. The candy became popular at weddings, where sayings such as “Married in satin, love will not be lasting” and “Married in white, you have chosen right” foretold humorous prophecies of the new marriage.

The conversation candy hearts, as they were originally called,  that we know today date back to 1902, when the company printed sayings on candy shapes including postcards, baseballs, horseshoes, and watches. The sayings are updated every year and the hearts have been used in creative crafts, cake decorations, cute Valentine’s Day gifts, and — sweetest of all marriage proposals.

The New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) makes more than 100,000 pounds of candy hearts every year which adds up to billion of little hearts – more than enough for everyone in the world to have one

Candy hearts are the best-selling Valentine’s Day candy. Yep, they beat out chocolate.

In 2010, for the first time in 145 years, the company opened up the conversation and created a new line of hearts with expressions selected by the public. The most popular new sayings for conversation candy hearts are “Tweet Me,” “Text Me,” “You Rock,” “Love Bug,” “Soul Mate,” and “Me + You.” Among this year’s selection? BFF, TE AMO, and GIRL POWER.

In order to get the old sayings, you can have them custom made — but you’ll have to buy a full production run (1.7 million candy hearts!).

Tuesday was spent enjoying a sunshine day at Prairie Wolf dog park. We’ll also head out with our pups today and tomorrow. Hopefully, before the North Wind doth blow in again as is expected.

I have lots to post about from my trip last week, but despite best intentions at the end of the day all I can do it stare blankly at my computer and try to catch up on a few e-mails. My days start at about 4:30am, fast forwards until around 6:30pm when the last day campers heads home and then we settle in with our overnight campers for some family time. Maybe this weekend Odd and I will catch up with a few posts.
