Alaska~Day 2 Anchorage to Denali

Happy Summer Solstice!

The ride between Anchorage and Denali was uneventful. We did stop to ferret out Sarah Palin’s house (you betcha!) and were lucky enough to see the tippy top of Mount McKinley. Clouds later rolled in and covered the peak.

In Denali, we are expecting 22 hours of sunlight. I’m going to try really hard to get a picture at 11:59pm. Really.

I find it ODD that Denali National Park has so few rules. There are no signs admonishing visitors not to litter, not to feed the wild life, or insisting that paths be respected.  There is one sign in the Visitors Center with a gentle reminder about respecting the land around us and reminding us that the wildlife lives here and we are guests.

Today’s show and tell:

Sarah Palin’s house in Wasilla, Alaska.  It was a little embarrassing to ask a local where her house was but he was pretty forthcoming with directions. The house sits on a lake surrounded by everything from trailers to shacks to like houses. The real estate we have seen in Alaska has been more rugged and sensible than pretty.

Mount McKinley  (Athabaskan for “The Great One”) in Alaska is the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of approximately 20,320 feet. We were very fortunate to see the peak before the clouds rolled in.

My First Moose. I think she is beautiful!. A few Moose facts. They are faster than they look. I kept this in mind at all times! The word moose comes from the comes from the Algonquin Indians and means twig eater. I am calling her Twiggy. It fits, don’t you think? The moose is the worlds largest deer and they live a very long time happily ever after!!

AWWW. Can you believe it!! Is this the cutest baby moose you have ever seen. Ever!!  Mom Moose was close by but seemed content to let the tourist go on and on and on about her little one. Or perhaps she just glad the baby was amused with the tourists and she could graze in peace.

A Fourteen year old with a GPS and a Grandfather with a Map…and a mom who still firmly believes in filling stations directions while the former and the later battle it out. We made it and in the end…..well we MADE IT!!!

Glad you were in my Odd neighborhood. Feel free to drop by any time. Odd Loves Company and odd loves you and you and you!! I would love to hear from you in the comment section of this blog, or on Facebook or Twitter!

  1. Cole is right! Wise kid. Stay away from wild moms of any species! By the way, love the updates. I’ve always wanted to go to Alaska and this is as close as I will get for a while!

  2. Thank goodness for technology. Where else could I get updates when you are so far away? Loving the posts.

  3. Just keep the zebra jacket zipped and you can probably get within millimeters of any moose safely. Enjoy the rest of your trip. The pictures are fantastic!
