★~ Today’s Quote:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
and to the republic for which it stands
one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

★~ Flag Day:

American flag

Oh say does the star spangled banner yet wave! On Flag Day, we honor and commemorate the United States flag. President Woodrow Wilson made this holiday official in 1916. However, the idea of an annual celebration of the flag dates as far back as 1885, when schoolteacher Bernard J. Cigrand held the first recognized Flag Day. He chose June 14 because it was on this day in 1777 that the Second Continental Congress adopted the stars and stripes.

★~ Pop Goes The Weasel Day:

Pop goes the weasle

While many versions of the song exist, the most common historical explanation for the lyrics involves the people of London blowing their money at the local pub.

There are lots of versions of Pop Goes The Weasel but the  original lyrics read:

Up and down the City road
In and out the Eagle,
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop! Goes the weasel

Supposedly, the poor people of London would spend what little money they had at the Eagle Tavern, drinking their sorrows away. They would then have to pawn their Sunday clothes for more money to feed themselves and their families and claim it back before Sunday. Not it all makes sense, right?

The Eagle was an old pub in City Road London.  In 1825 it was rebuilt into a music hall, demolished in 1901 and rebuilt as a pub.   Today, this pub house bears a plaque with this interpretation of “Pop Goes the Weasel” along with the history of the pub.

How to celebrate? I’ll leave it up to your imagination!

★~ Happy National Strawberry Shortcake Day:

Strawberry Shortcake

Shortcake is a European invention, but food historians generally agree that the idea of combining strawberries and shortcake together is the creative genius of cooks in the United States. The earliest recorded recipe for strawberry shortcake is found in Miss Leslie’s Ladies Recipe Book, published in 1847. The recipe is for something called “strawberry cake,” but it’s strikingly similar to strawberry shortcake.

The Kitchen Witch shares her Gramma’s strawberry shortcake story from the past along with her present-day strawberry shortcake recipe.

My Answers:

It wasn’t a crappy car, it was  my Aunts Oldsmobile, but Joe drove it until it had to be stopped by putting your foot on the ground.  The Mimi-mobile deserves it’s own post. Really.

Today, I’m searching for a heavy malt micro beer.  Why? Cole is bound and determined to make beer ice cream. I’ve heard it is better than ice cream bread. No. We. Never. Learn.  I’ve also decided to cover the top of my fence in coke bottle lids. I started last night. I have a few bags full that I was saving for a bottle top collector, but have decided to use them myself. I will post a picture when the first section is done and you can take a guess when I will finish and how many coke bottle tops it will take…..I am calling it My Ode to Coke Mosaic.

  1. Morno,
Strawberry Shortcake now there is a great dessert to celebrate. Wonder how much you could pawn old clothes for, it doesn’t seem like it would be enough to feed a family.
    Ford Faremont: Awful, mean car.
    Mayo

    • Maybe you could take Strawberry shortcake fixings to your your sisters! I think my dad drove a Fairmont and felt the same way. I prefer Miracle Whip over Mayo.
Hope you had a great day!

  2. Good Morno,
Strawberry shortcake the perfect summer dessert. I use my Mom’s recipe. No shortcuts, all the good stuff and it hasn’t failed me yet.
Ford Pinto. I knew that car was a mistake the moment we drove it off lot. The only good news about it was inexpensive and nobody died in it.
    pickles
4 hours when my kids were babies. These days I average 8.
    Cooking, gardening, history, languages
    Making a Baked Alaska.
Beer ice cream is surprisingly good. Looking forward to the mosaic pictures.
Hope your weather is as pretty as ours is.

Hope your weather is as pretty as our weather.

    • Yum, I love Baked Alaska! I hear it is very tricky to make. You’ve had bear ice cream? It’s good? Sounds so awful. Wasn’t the Pinto responsible for a lot of deaths due to explosion? Great name for a car tho…
Rainy today but our weather has been very pretty!

  3. flag day reminds me, again, that i need to attach a bracket & get a flag up on the house. delinquents damaged the last one.

    • Dumb Kids! Next time let Nik catch them.
I agree about jalapeños and will add Green chili! In New Mexico you have to remind them to leave them off!

  4. ~My crappiest car was my favorite: 1972 VW Bug. Loved that car.
~No sandwich should EVER have Miracle Whip. Actually it should be banned completely.
~Did 36 hours at a trivia contest in 1975, then slept for 36 more hours!
~Jeopardy is my DVR’s show every day: I would pick; Cooking, Music, Pets, and fun facts from the 60’s & 70’s
~Good at creative projects, but never have the time to do it. Like writing my cookbook.
    Happy coke bottle capping!!

    • Cole is in the process of buying a VW Bug (pre 1975) to refurbish for his senior projects. His own blog and details will be forthcoming. No Miracle whip?? HUH?? I could not have done trivia by the time I got to 36 hours. I’ve gone 42 but was brain numb.
I watch jeopardy when I have my nails done. I could never go on it, but think it’s fun to watch…every 3rd show or so I get one right. A big self esteem boost.

  5. Coke bottle tops on your fence? Hmm, you’re having way more fun this summer than I am!
    Answers to your questions:
    1) Chevy Blazer. Way too expensive and almost totaled it.
    2) Relish.
    3) I’m guessing 12 hours.
    4) The Bible, healing gemstones, classical music, tennis, Notre Dame, and Shelties!
    5) Golf.
    Have a happy Friday!

    • I probably just spend more time out in my yard than you do. But I am a big believer in fun. No relish on your hot dog—wait, I don’t think you are a hot dog fan…..Sounds like you would do very well on Jeopardy even if you didn’t set up the categories!
      Happy Saturday!

  6. Can’t ever remember having a bad car since we were always in the car biz I never drove a car long enough to have problems with it..
Love strawberry shortcake ..we will have some on Father’s Day..
I would love to master all ELECTRONIC gadgets and gizmos but I am annoyed with them all ! so there ! 😀

    • Funny about the car. You seem to do pretty well with the computer! And have mastered the art of finding the good on-line deal (your boots)—-you have to start some where!

  7. Since today is Flag Day the Boy Scouts and Kiwanis Club put large flags out at every house in my neighborhood..I love to see all the American flags blowing in the breeze..They installed a pipe in the ground in front of every house so 6 times a year they put the flags in the pipe out by the street..What a pretty sight ! 😯 🙄 😀

    • Only in Texas :-D. What a great idea. My neighborhood has flags of every Nationality flying…it feels like the United Nations. My Polish neighbors are rebels tho, they fly the American Flag it’s a very nice “so there.”
