★~Dog Days Of Summer:

Shark Week, Dog Days, Presidential Jokes, Raspberry Tart Day

Enjoy the last day of the “dog days of summer”  (July 3 through August 11)  The 20 days before and 20 days after the “Dog” star Sirius rises and falls in conjunction with the sun. Sirius is the brightest star in the constellations Canis Major (Great Dog) The ancient Romans believed heat from the star Sirius added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather and coined the term-Dog Days of Summer.

★~ Presidential Joke Day:

The holiday began in 1984, when Ronald Reagan made a joke during a sound check for a radio broadcast. “My fellow Americans,” he said, “I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.”

Reagan was not aware, however, that his feed was live. And unfortunately, not everyone got the joke. Soviet officials got word of the broadcast and put the military on high alert.

Once the threat of nuclear war had abated, Americans found the situation hilarious, and decided to memorialize Reagan’s famous quip by instituting National Presidential Joke Day on August 11th.

★~ National Raspberry Tart Day:

Ah, the tart—Today we are celebrating the perfect combination of crispy crust, creamy filling, and Raspberries. Tarts were first introduced during the Middle Ages. Though fruit-topped tarts are sweet and decadent, many salty varieties also exist. For example, in France, many of these open-faced pies are made with eggs, cheeses, meats and vegetables. These savory tarts are similar to quiches. Whether filled with Raspberry, chocolate or goat cheese—tarts are delicious! To celebrate National Raspberry Tart Day, head to your local bakery to pick up one or if you are in the mood…make your own raspberry tart! But what every you do don’t steal one of the Queens!

Swamp Cooler: We spend a lot of time outside. Fortunately, this summer Chicago temps have been very mild, but a cool breeze in the afternoon is still nice and this does the trick!

“Super” supermoon of August, 2014. First night, August 10 but it’s not to late to admire it.

In December, our daughter, Magnolia was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome which is a rare neurological disorder. Because of Rett, scoliosis, seizures, feeding tube surgery, loss of mobility, loss of useful hand control and an inability to talk are all things she will possibly deal with over the course of her life.

It is not genetic. It can happen to anyone. We certainly never believed it would happen to us.

Be Magnolia’s Hope. Help us get to a cure. Share this video.

See, unless you’re affected by it directly, it’s unlikely you’ve ever heard of Rett Syndrome. That’s why I made this video. All I want is for people to share this. Just share it. The more people who view this video the closer we get to a cure. This video has ads on it so that every view earns money. If we get enough views, we could fund a clinical trial.

A cure is possible. It is reversible. The cure and treatments just doesn’t exist yet.

This weekend caught me coming and going. It was tail wagging busy. Check out my camp facebook page for pictures and videos. We did take time out to see the movie Boyhood. It was really good. A bit more on the artsy side then my usual movie fare, but really interesting and entertaining. Click here to read a bit more about how it was filmed.

Wishing everyone a most Merry Monday! And don’t let the sharks get you down!

  1. We saw “Lucy” and liked it but am glad it was not a 2 hour deal or I would have been on overload. The butter sculptures at the State Fair are definitely Do Not Miss things—-i personally love the Butter Cow. Happy Monday!

    • Lucy? I know nothing. I’ll have to read about it. I am dying to go to the State Fair. Alas too long a drive to make in a day. I’ll have to just dream about funnel cake, buttered corn, cotton candy, butter sculptures (I did a post on them somewhere on Odd) and wonderful people watching.

  2. Morno,

(^^^) Great way to start off the week along with a raspberry tart.
You boy planning to join the circus as a strong man?
    Hulk Hogan and you? Interesting.
Summers flying by too quick. I played golf both Sat and Sun and my kids and I went and saw the movie Guardians of the Galaxy. i enjoyed it. Summer is flying by too fast.

    • Nice shark. Raspberry tart is so tasty and I bet it is at your local bakery.
I’ll have to ask Cole what his next act will be.
Speaking of Cole he really enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy. I haven’t seen it yet.
      Have a good one.

  3. Love the photo of Cole and that huge doggie! Oh, and you with Hulk Hogan, too.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a raspberry tart. It looks pretty, though.
Your camp photos are ideally suited for Facebook — they make camp look like so much FUN!
I got a LOT of beading done over the past few days. Sadly, I didn’t get photos before sending them off!

    • Cole and Milo the swiss mountain puppy. They love one another.
Thanks for visiting our camp fb page. It is a very fun group.
